The New York City Police Department this morning remembered its members who died on September 11th, and those who have passed since working at the site.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Archbishop Timothy Dolan were among those paying tribute at the Lincoln Center event.
The department lost 23 of its officers on the morning of September 11, 2001.
“In the history of the NYPD there has never been a day like September 11th, when it comes to the losses we sustained and to the courage we witnessed in our ranks,” Kelly said.
“You police officers are signs, symbols, yes…sacraments. And I purposefully use that word of life and help and safety and hope and honor and valor. Never more so than on that day,” Dolan said.
Mayor Bloomberg presented active duty officers and family members of those who died with medallions of honor.
