Tropical Storm Katia strengthened in the Atlantic and may be declared a hurricane later today, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
Katia, about 985 miles (1,585 kilometers) from the southern Cape Verde Islands, has 65 mph winds and is speeding west- northwest at 21 mph, the NHC said in a 5 a.m. New York time advisory. A tropical storm becomes a hurricane when its winds reach 74 mph. Katia’s winds increased 20 mph yesterday.
The storm is moving on a path that will take it to waters northeast of Puerto Rico on Sept. 4, according to an NHC projection. That day it may reach the 110-mph threshold for a “major” hurricane, the NHC said.
Katia is the 11th named storm of this Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. The NHC says the average hurricane season usually produces that in total.
A large area of thunderstorms over Cuba and the western Caribbean meanwhile has a 10 percent chance of organizing into a tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico in the next two days, according to the hurricane center.
Commodity Weather Group LLC President Matt Rogers yesterday said the system may turn into a tropical depression or tropical storm by the weekend. He also said it was only a 5 percent threat to oil and gas interests. The Gulf is home to 31 percent of U.S. oil output and 7 percent of natural gas.
In the Pacific off Mexico, the hurricane center is tracking an area of stormy weather about 60 miles south of the resort of Zihuatanejo that it said has an 80 percent chance of becoming a tropical depression within two days.

It is summer. Time for hurricanes. There are many good websites to track them. Katia is unlkely to hit the East Coast, and if it comes close won’t be for more than a week.
Unless you are a “weather freak”, stop worrying about it.
We have a “weather sites” already – YWN is a “frum site”.
if theres basicly no chance of it reaching the East Coast why is it even being posted here??
#1 & #2 when did you guys become weathermen. Also remember it is up to Hashem if the storm will hit the east coast or not.
So I say let the weather take its cause and we should pray to Hashem the ultimate weatherman that the hurricane should strike no land and just blow away 😉
It’s not expected to come near us–it’s forecasted to go out to see. But we’ll see…….
