NYC: No Timetable Set To Restart Transit System

The city’s mass transit system is suffering from a hurricane hangover.

The MTA doesn’t know when it will begin the lengthy process of powering up city subways and restoring bus service to the streets – but public transportation won’t be restored in time for the Monday morning commute.

The lingering winds and rains from Irene – now downgraded to a tropical storm – are preventing MTA workers for checking elevated structures and subway stations for damage and flooding.

Several transit yards and depots that were used to store empty trains and buses after yesterday’s unprecedented weather-related shutdown are now under water, said agency spokesman Jeremy Soffin.
