Williamsburg: UJO Tells Residents To Prepare For Storm

The following is a press release from UJO of Williamsburg to the community:

Williamsburg residents should be aware that while we will not feel the brunt of  the expected hurricane, it will effect us dramatically starting on Motzei Shabbos and continuing Sunday morning – but conditions could change. Very heavy wind and rains increase the likelihood of flooding, fallen trees, blocked roads and power outages, so weather conditions should be closely monitored. On Motzei Shabbos 39 miles per hour are expected and they will increase in time. This can severely limit public transportation, police department patrols, and other emergency response time.

On Sunday morning, winds can reach up to 90mph making it dangerous to be on the street. The Williamsburg area can expect street flooding and heavy winds.

The UJO asks that people;

Be informed:  Pay attention to the updates, the course of the storm could change.

Stockpile:  Food, water and medicine. People should also have a reserve of water (it’s a good idea to freeze water in gallon plastic bags which can help to prevent the food in your refrigerator from spoiling in the event of a power outage).

Prepare for Power outages:  People should gather candles, flashlights and extra batteries in case there is a loss of electricity.

Seniors and Sick: Family members should take precautions with elderly or senior relatives, especially those who live alone or rely on medical equipment. Emergency plans should be developed in case a sick or senior person needs medical attention during the storm.  Relatives should make sure such people has supplies to last them 4 days if need be.

Shachris on Sunday: If Williamsburg is hit by the full force of it would be well advised that people stay in.  In larger buildings or buildings with elderly people it would be advisable that minyanim are held in the buildings.

Initial reports are that the mountains will not be as affected, as badly (although it is likely that there will be high winds and heavy rains), we ask the people keep themselves informed as the course of the storm can change suddenly.
