Brooklyn – Councilman David Greenfield made it 2-for-2 this year, hosting his second annual Greenfield Classic, a softball game that pitted the officers of the 66th Precinct against members of the Boro Park Shomrim on Wednesday evening, August 24th at the St. Athanasius sports complex on 53rd Street and 20th Avenue in Boro Park.
The NYPD’s 66th Precinct and Shomrim played with passion and pride for seven exciting innings, dazzling the hundreds of cheering spectators in the crowd. Shomrim southpaw Menachem Diamondson put together a spellbinding pitching performance over seven frames, limiting the NYPD to three runs and holding off numerous rally threats in the late innings. Shomrim got out to an early lead over the 66th and kept the runs coming to secure the victory, matching the NYPD’s win last year with a title of their own.
“The crowd and the atmosphere were terrific tonight,” said a pleased Councilman Greenfield. “Both teams competed hard and displayed terrific sportsmanship.” Councilman Greenfield continued, “Shomrim may have won this time, but everyone here comes out on top because the NYPD’s relationship with Shomrim continues to make our community stronger and safer. This game was a huge success and drew spectators from all across our community in support of two of the greatest Boro Park institutions – the 66th Precinct of the NYPD and the volunteer Shomrim Brooklyn South Safety Patrol.”
The event drew hundreds from the Boro Park community, including community leaders like Assemblyman Peter Abbate, Jr., Councilman Lew Fidler, Councilman Jumaane Williams, Councilman Vincent Gentile, Councilwoman Letitia James, Deputy Inspector John Sprague, Lieutenant Jimmy Sellek, Detective Mike Milici, Detective Vinny Galeno, Sergeant Yitzy Jablon, and Shomrim Coordinators Yanky Daskall, Simcha Bernath, Moti Katz, Sam Follman, Shaya Lichtenstein, and Abe Kastow.
Starters for Shomrim Boro Park included Ushi Wittel (Right Field), Meir Rosinger (Shortstop), Shia Weiss (Center Field), Yossi Wasertal (Short Center Field), Motty Friedman (Second Base), Menachem Diamondson (Pitcher), Mordy Itzkowitz (Third Base), Abe Feltman (Catcher), Shlomie Gluck (First Base), and Motty Perl (Left Field)
Starters for the 66th Precinct included Deputy Inspector John Sprague (Second Base), Lieutenant Seth Friedman (Left Center Field), Officer Pete Talavera (Shortstop), Lieutenant Jimmy Selleck (Third Base), Officer Anthony Carriera (Right Field), Detective Gio Talavera (Right Center), Officer Anthony Napolitano (Pitcher), Officer Adam Demaio (First Base), Officer Pete Guerci (Left Field), and Sergeant Mike Adriano (Catcher).
The Greenfield Softball Classic was privately sponsored by Councilman Greenfield, Lunch Break on 17th Avenue & 62nd Street and CandyLand of 16th Avenue. Thanks to their support, hundreds of people enjoyed food and refreshments, including glatt kosher hot dogs, sandwiches, cotton candy, and soft drinks.
At the end of the game, Councilman Greenfield presented the beautiful Greenfield Classic Trophy to Shomrim softball team captains Yossi Wasertal and Shlomie Gluck. Shomrim will get to keep this trophy until next Summer when they will have to defend their title against the 66th Precinct.
