Your comparison of his statement to Reform ideology is severely flawed; the basic premise he stated can be found in numerous seforim. It is also an important one, because no matter what side of this debate you are, we all agree to the tragic state of the secular nature of the state, and there is no question that an overemphasis on this one mitzvah (great as it may be) was a large factor in swaying people.
