Tal-Man introduced the bold-faced Rashi in the 80s (maybe 90s). But I’ve never had a problem with using non-bolded Rashis either. It’s fairly intuitive, especially if you’ve learned that Daf before. Every Gemara I used until I was about 15 had non-bolded Rashis. The bold makes things slightly easier but it doesn’t bother me. I do a large chunk of learning (when I’m out) on dafyomi.org anyway and Rashi isn’t bolded there.
