As tensions mount between Israel and Poland following the latter’s controversial new Holocaust law that passed through Polish Parliament on Thursday.
The bill aims to criminalize accusations of Polish complicity in the Holocaust. Having passed through parliament the bill now awaits the signature of the Polish president Andrzej Duda to become law.
The bill was protested vociferously by the Israeli government and media who claim that it is an attempt to whitewash any apparent involvement of Poles in wartime crimes against Jews.
On Thursday afternoon, Israel’s first official action in response to the bill’s passing came: Israel has decided to postpone the planned trip of Poland’s National Security Adviser, a trip that had already been planned and organized.
A statement was issued on the topic by Israel’s Foreign Ministry: “Based on the recent passing of the Holocaust law by the Polish Parliament, Israel has decided to delay the planned visit of Poland’s National Security Adviser.”
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu previously said that no political law can re-write history, no matter who passes the law and attempts to refute it.
