Cholent Bean Update

gefen-cholent-beans2By Rabbi Yair Hoffman for the Five Towns Jewish Times

The Five Towns Jewish Times and Yeshiva World News received the following update this morning from Mr. Chaim Herzog of the Kedem executive offices in regard to this week’s Cholent bean scare.

“Some bags of Gefen brand Chulent Mix with the UPC# 710069035003 and Cranberry Beans UPC# 710069035300 with Best By dates ranging from 8/18 to 10/18 were found to contain insects. After consulting with our Certifying Agency; The Volover Rav, we advise our customers that possibly affected product should be withdrawn from the marketplace.

We would like to stress that only a minority of product has found to be affected and that our recall is a precautionary measure to maintain the highest level of kashrus and quality for our products.

Under proper storage conditions, it is unusual to find infestation in these products sold in the United States. The kashrus procedures at Gefen meet the highest kashrus standards. However, consumers should be aware that legumes and grains could develop infestation when stored in warm conditions.”

If someone had used these cholent beans without having previously checked them, some Rabbonim have ruled that it should be discarded. Everyone should consult with their own Rav on this matter.

  1. What does this “legumes and grains could develop infestation when stored in warm conditions” mean?
    Were there larvae?
    Were there eggs that developed?
Was the development of infestation the result of spontaneous generation?

  2. Eggs are there. They are everywhere actually. But they are so small that it’s not considered a beria for some reason. Ask the Rov. This is sort of the answer I got when I asked.

  3. BTW, IT’S NOT JUST GEFEN BEANS.

I HEARD OTHER BRANDS HAVE THIS ISSUE TOO. LIKE UNGER’S.

PLEASE BE AWARE AND CHECK CAREFULLY!!!
