Security Crisis Impacts Jerusalem’s Arab Taxi Drivers

monitThe wave of Islamic terrorism plaguing Israel since erev Rosh Hashanah has had an impact on many areas, especially Yerushalayim. With each attack perpetrated in the capital one sees fewer and fewer people out and about. Many residents simply go out less, and for some, only when absolutely essential.

Despite the worrisome situation, some residents have found a positive aspect. Residents of Pisgat Ze’ev and Maale Adumim report the present security crisis has resulted in lower taxi fares. They explain that today, one can pay NIS 60 instead of NIS 90 or 100 for a cab to or from their home to the center of the city.

According to the MyNet report, the main users of taxis during weekends are the young returning from a night on the town, and today they can get a ride in a taxi for considerably less as drivers prefer to work for minimal profit rather than shut down entirely. This is also because people are aware most of the taxi drivers in the capital are Arab and many people simply fear taking a cab today as well. The drivers hope the reduced fare will help potential riders to reconsider.

Some of the Arab drivers reportedly explain they are simply remaining home, aware the situation is such that no one wants to ride with them.

  1. It’s sad that this is what it takes for Jews to stop riding in Arab cabs. When Rav Chaim Kanievsky ruled it was forbidden, no one seemed to care. But to save a few shekels, many are willing to enrich those who dream of our demise.

  2. Unfortunately I agree with #1, Why did it take this situation to open people’s eyes? I know many people fly Turkish Airline because it is cheap! Who wants to fly into a Muslim country? Is it safe? I hailed a Cab in Yerushalayim once to go to several places. After 1 stop A frum Yid asked to come along and he told me in Yiddish that the driver was an arab. Since then I do not just grab a taxi I call a Jewish cab company. I feel safer and it is a very pleasant ride! Whether the driver is Charedi or Chiloni he is my brother! People are now looking for Jewish laborers / movers / handy men even thought they costs more, because it is safe!
My daughter had a contractor come to give an estimate for work and he brought his Arab worker. The Arab saw a bottle of water on the table and he just took it and drank from the bottle! My daughter was appalled but at that point said nothing. Needless to say he was not hired! We must stop employing Arabs, Period!

  3. Feh. I paid 80.10 to a frum taxi driver from Pisgat Zev to Malha, even though the taxi firm told me it would be approx 60.

He generously dropped the 10 agorot.

  4. We were recently waiting for a taxi, and seeing one with a little flag with the company name, I mistakenly thought he was Jewish and stopped him. As soon as I realized he was an Arab I sent him away and he got very angry and started to yell at us. He then went up the block, turned around, came back across the street and yelled some more, and repeated the whole thing a third time. But we were not able to get his licence plate.

The name of the company is GETT, they have a white flag with black print, and it is an Arab company from Gilo.
    Beware!
