Likud Campaign Turns Against Shas

likudThe Likud party campaign has taken a new turn, slamming the Shas party in its election posters. A new posted that is circulating that say “Aryeh Deri is a leftist”, trying to pull right-wing Shas voters over to Likud on Election Day.

With Election Day closing in, more attention is focusing on the chareidi vote with polls showing an unprecedented number of chareidi voters who remain undecided at this time. The split in Shas and Degel Hatorah has many voters wondering. The introduction of the Yachad party for some, is a viable alternative to the standard chareidi parties. There is also the Chabad vote, which is significant and the fact that in this campaign, Yahadut Hatorah has decided it can approach former Shas voters in the hope of bringing them over to Gimmel.

Likud is now targeting Shas but it is believed that its aggressive campaign will also targeted the Ashkenazi chareidi party in an effort to become the largest party and control the next coalition government.

  1. A lot of the lesser frum sefardi crowd will be looking to switch parties with all the shenanigans happening within Shas, especially since R’ Ovadia (ZL) passed. Likud is a reasonable alternative.

  2. Likud prefers that the hareidi vote go to Yachad, since Yachad’s position on national security issues means that Yachad can only join a Likud-led coalition.Yachad can be counted on to support a Likud-led coaltion, and not to make many demands (since they don’t have the option of allying with anyone else).

The other two hareidi parties can go with either a Likud led, or Labor led, coalition, and will insist on ending the plan to draft yeshiva students (which is very unpopular in many right-wing circles). Labor, especially if including Arab support, is better placed to end conscription (either by switching to a volunteer/professional army, or in liberal allowance of exemptions for religious, moral or conscientious reasons)–remember most Arabs and many leftists also oppose military service.
