First Case of Enterovirus EV-D68 Confirmed in New Jersey

healthAuthorities have confirmed a case of enterovirus EV-D68 in New Jersey, the first case documented in the Garden State and the latest in an outbreak of the potentially severe respiratory illness, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The confirmed case was identified from a specimen sent to the CDC from a Philadelphia hospital, the agency said. The child’s condition has since improved and the child has been discharged.

Enterovirus EV-D68 has already affected more than a dozen children in New York. Cases have been reported in 12 states across the country.

There is no vaccination. Prevention involves hand-washing, disinfecting surfaces and any usual steps to prevent the spread of flu.
