Two days prior to Rosh Hashanah, Treasury Minister Moshe Kahlon visited Hagaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky, together with MK Moshe Gafni. The visit took place in the apartment of the Torah Gadol, during which he asked that the room be cleared so that he could speak privately with Kahlon and Gafni.
According to a report by Bechadrei Charedim, Rav Kanievsky told Kahlon about his worry that the High Court would decide to do away with the current Enlistment Law. Rav Kanievsky had tears in his eyes when he told Kahlon that: “The enlistment law is the most important thing to the Torah world. Please help the Charedi representatives establish a new law.”
Rav Kanievsky’s appeal to Kahlon came after the Minister stated that he refused any new change in the law that would circumvent the High Court’s decision.
Kahlon reportedly replied that he would help create a new law that would return the status quo to what it was prior to the High Court’s intervention and striking down of the Enlistment Law. However, Kahlon also mentioned that the particularly problematic paragraph which the High Court focused on when striking down the law would remain outside of any new law as it would simply allow the high court to strike down any new law proposed just as quickly as they struck this one down.
Rav Kanievsky accepted Kahlon’s words and blessed him for his promise to aid in the establishment of a new law. “In honor of this – may you have a good year full of success in everything you do,” said the Gadol baTorah.
