High Court: Women Can Run The Nation’s Rabbinical Courts

Israel’s High Court of Justice ruled that a woman can head Israel’s batei din, the rabbinical courts affiliated with the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. Court Vice President Justice Elyakim Rubinstein pointed out that today, women occupy many honorable positions in the public service and there is no reason that a woman cannot run the nation’s rabbinical courts.

Women’s rights organizations praised the ruling. Experts point out that the position is a managerial one more than it is a halachic post.

  1. Kol hakovod to the Court for affirming the rights of women but as a practical matter, this would seem to be one area where it may be better for a man to hold even the administrative position. Most of the rabbonim who serve in varying capacities in the batei din in EY lack the ability to take managerial directives from a woman.

  2. The “Rabbinical Courts” in the article are government agencies established under Israeli law. They are government courts applying Israeli law, which often is contrary to Torah law. How can a secular country limit part of its civil service based on religion, gender or ethnicity. There a non-government Beitei Din for those interest in adjudicating matter based on Torah – and by definition, they aren’t run by the government.

  3. They don’t even try to make people believe we are going according to the Torah’s way.
I guess this is good, also the blinded people know the truth.
