Maran Rav Shteinman: We Are Witnessing ‘Nissim V’Niflaos’

shtMaran HaGaon HaRav Aaron Yehuda Leib Shteinman Shlita commented on events regarding Operation Protective Edge, the IDF counter-terrorism offensive in Gaza. The gadol hador is quoted in Yated Neeman saying “Our entire lives are run by miracles and in recent days, we see Nissim V’Niflaos surpassing nature”.

“כל החיים שלנו הם בדרך נס, בימים האחרונים אנו רואים ניסים ונפלאות מעל לדרך הטבע”

Rav Shteinman explains that there is not a single person among Am Yisrael that has not witnessed the miracles taking place around Israel during the military operation and we must be genuinely aware of HKBH’s intervention.

The rav quotes the Ramban from the end of Parshas Bo that the world is run by miracles, and we have become accustomed to these miracles, referring to the day-to-day as ‘natural’ (derech hateva). However, the rav explains, the so-called natural is in itself a miracle, citing the manna that fell daily. Am Yisrael knew it was HKBH’s hand but they became accustomed to the daily occurrence and viewed it as such.

The rav continues;

“אחרי אלפי שנים וכי יש לנו הנהגה כזו שיורד מן – לחם מן השמים, אין הנהגה ניסית כזו, בכל זאת כל החיים שלנו הם בדרך נס. ומה שאנשים לא מבחינים בזה, לפי שהתרגלו לזה, וזה מה שאנו אומרים בתפילה ג’ פעמים ביום, ועל ניסיך שבכל יום עמנו, שכל הנהגת העולם היא נס”.

He adds during the time of Yirmiyahu HaNavi people lacked bitachon in Hashem and when asked why the masses are not engaged in Torah, they explained they had to earn a livelihood. Today explains the rav, HKBH once again is showing us miracles to remind us and compel us to remember that even if we do not see it with our own eyes, it is all miracles.

  1. Excuse my skepticism but I don’t regard the violent deaths of 29 IDF soldiers in 72 hours and the horrific murder of 3 other yeshiva bochurim as “Nissim V’Niflaos” . Its the worst slaughter in EY in nearly 10 years and this is somehow great news?

  2. I guess Rav Shteiman means over 2000 rockets sent to Israel, and directly only 2 casualties, both not Jewish. The problem is that he does not mention a Jewish innovation Iron Dome, dedicated brave soldiers of IDF, who day and night watch for Jewish people. You see every time some Chiloni praises the military, yeshiva crowd complain that they forget to mention Hakodosh Boruhu, but really they are doing the same, and forget to mention the soldiers and their dedication, only thanking Hashem and Yeshivah Bochurim learning. When doctor saves your life, you thank doctor and of course thank Hashem, so here should be both, because role of soldiers are like doctors, even more, and it would be a great Kiddush Hashem if we mention their role in this miracles as well, because they are true shlichim of Hashem.

  4. To #1
Over 2,000 rockets have been landing in Eretz Yisroel, and B”H, there have been many nissim! We have to count our blessings and thank Hakadosh Baruch Hu. The deaths of our bretheren are indeed a great tragedy, and we cannot question Hashems ways. We mortals cannot possibly understand the din vacheshbon. What we can understand is that there are nissim happening all the time and everyday, and for that we thank Hashem.

  5. To no. 1:
The Rav is referring to hundreds and hundreds of rockets that hamas fired into Eretz Yisroel and very few people got injured. Many rockets land in open fields. A few times it happened that a rocket landed very close to a building and there were only minor injuries. Even when the Iron dome knocks out a rocket, that is also a miracle.
    Sincerely,

  6. To pushiter Yid: I guess you would have the same question on CHaZa”L who established the nusach of modim to be said three times a day. That is far from poshut!

  7. #7 alexfromny – I don’t understand you. On the one hand you say, “I GUESS Rav Shteiman means over 2000 rockets sent to Israel, and directly only 2 casualties…”. The word “GUESS” implies that HaRav Shteinman did not state out right what he was referring to. Then you go on to say, “The problem is that he does not mention a Jewish innovation Iron Dome, dedicated brave soldiers of IDF…”. This implies that you believe that he indeed stated what he was referring to and the IDF was not among that list. Do you see the contradiction?

Furthermore, we are hearing (reading) this second hand. Neither I, nor you were there when he made his statements. Perhaps he made clear statements about the IDF and the editors chose not to print that.

Another point is that Rav Shteinman has previously requested that we daven for the IDF soldiers, so why are you implying that he disregards them?

  8. @Gadolhadorah UNEXCUSED! when you have learned enough Torah and have reached the level of reb shteinman get back to me. Until then go back to listening and accepting words of gedolim.
The iron dome is being compared to the modern day ananei hakavod and because of the dimness of some people’s eyes, they can’t see the nissim of Hashem that are going on right here right now.

  9. To Alex fromny
I read a few articles already, some online and some in the newspapers, Rav Shteinman several times is requesting from the Tzibur to please daven and say Tehilim for the Israeli soldiers.
