Virus Afflicting Children Shows Up In NYC Area

healthThe New York City area is seeing its first cases of the uncommon respiratory illness that has shown up in children in a dozen states.

Health officials said Wednesday that a New York City child and a Long Island elementary school student have been diagnosed with enterovirus 68.

Officials say the Long Island patient is recovering at home in North Hempstead.

They didn’t provide information on the other child’s condition.

At least 130 cases have been confirmed nationwide, the worst needing life support for breathing difficulties.

Asthmatic children have been especially vulnerable.

No deaths have been reported.

Officials sent advisories alerting schools to the virus’ recent resurgence.

They say children should wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, disinfect regularly and avoid sharing cups and utensils.
