Indian Point Nuclear Plant To Use Robot To Find Leak Source

ipnrOfficials at a nuclear plant north of New York City plan to use a camera-equipped robot to help find the source of radioactive material showing up in the groundwater below the plant.

Indian Point officials say the contamination most likely stems from a maintenance shutdown in March when radioactive water possibly leaked out from a damaged pipe or drain. It’s not considered a public health threat.

Program director Don Mayer tells the Journal News the water would have eventually settled on the bedrock beneath the plant. He says it’s now ebbing and flowing in response to percolating rainwater.

The elevated levels of tritium were first found in two monitoring wells in late March.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is pressing the plant to find the source of the contamination.
