As the IDF prepares for Rosh Hashanah, the IDF Rabbinate reports it is buying 400 new shofarot that have been inspected and certified as ‘mehudar’. Officials in the military rabbinate explain they wish to be certain that all personnel will be permitted to fulfill the mitzvah. The shofarot will be distributed ahead of Rosh Hashanah and collected after yomtov and stored in a logistics base.
Last year, Tel Aviv’s Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau had experts check into the shofarot and expressed concerns as to their kashrus integrity.
