Iran Reportedly Appoints Mojtaba Khamenei As Next Supreme Leader Amid Father’s Illness

Iran International television reported that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the ailing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is poised to assume leadership of Iran after his father’s death—and potentially even during his lifetime. The report claims that Iran’s Assembly of Experts, a powerful body responsible for selecting the Supreme Leader, held a highly secretive meeting on September 26 to deliberate on Mojtaba’s succession. According to sources, the meeting was convened at Khamenei’s personal request, with roughly 60 council members summoned without warning. While the decision to support Mojtaba’s appointment was ultimately unanimous, insiders allege it was reached under duress. Some members reportedly opposed both the process and the selection itself but were pressured and threatened by representatives of the Supreme Leader to secure their compliance. To avoid potential backlash, the meeting was conducted under stringent secrecy, with members warned of severe consequences if any details were leaked. According to the report, Khamenei feared that public knowledge of the discussion would ignite widespread protests, given the deep economic and social challenges currently facing the Iranian people. Over the past two years, Ayatollah Khamenei has been grooming Mojtaba for leadership, despite his lack of formal political or military experience. Mojtaba has begun playing a prominent role in decision-making, a strategy analysts believe is designed to normalize his leadership and secure his position as a successor. Some sources suggest Khamenei may even transfer power to Mojtaba while still alive to ensure the transition occurs smoothly and under his direct influence. The potential succession has sparked concerns over the stability of the Iranian regime. Critics argue that keeping leadership within the Khamenei family could fuel internal tensions, particularly as Iran grapples with a crumbling economy and widespread discontent. Such a move could be seen as an attempt to consolidate power within a dynasty, undermining the legitimacy of the regime in the eyes of many Iranians. The prospect of Mojtaba’s rise has also attracted international attention. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently addressed the Iranian people directly, urging them to reject the regime and offering cooperation in stabilizing Iran’s economy in exchange for peaceful coexistence with Israel. Meanwhile, Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, living in exile, has positioned himself as an alternative leader, promising to help guide Iran toward a democratic future if called upon by the people. Op-Ed: The JTA And The Undisputed King Of Jewish Music – MBD

[By Rabbi Yair Hoffman] The Jewish Telegraphic Agency was once known for its commitment to quality news coverage. In their appeal for funds to the general Jewish public they write that they are, “providing unbiased, timely, quality coverage of news of Jewish interest and concern..” In fact, however, a recent JTA report that spread to the general media was filled with misleading and false information that serves to spread hate and discord. Quoting no Hebrew language or grammar experts, the JTA characterized a word in biblical Hebrew as a “pejorative term for blacks.” With this characterization, they then attempted to portray Hasidic singer Mordechai Ben David as racist. The JTA then slurred the audience by juxtaposing the audience bursting into applause after the alleged racial slur was said. The Forward also made the same error. It’s headline ran, “Hasidic Star Mordechai Ben David Uses Racist Slur Against Obama — Crowd Cheers.” Whether they did this purposefully or just followed the JTA error is unknown, but the damage and false information has snowballed. JTA has vilified an entire community. In fact, the JTA has committed two very grave journalistic errors, and in doing so has falsely maligned an entire audience of people. The bursting into applause occurred at the announcement of, “in a few weeks there will be a new president.” The JTA either purposefully or erroneously placed the applause after the full statement. Anyone examining the video footage itself will see how the JTA maligned this audience. The second error lies in JTA stating categorically that the word “Kushi” is necessarily derogatory. In fact, it is the English equivalent of the word, “black”, “colored”, or “negro.” The word appears in the bible many times and it is not derogatory at all (See Samuel II chapter 18, Jeremiah 13, Jeremiah 36 and 38, Divrei haYamim II Chapter 14). In the Mishna, Tosefta and Talmud the word is not used pejoratively either. In Israel the word “Kushi” is not used for Ethiopians, rather the word “Et’iopi” is used. When referencing an American “African-American” the word, “Kushi” is often used and it is not pejorative. There are uses of the word in certain contexts that are pejorative. Also, in this context if someone were to say, “and the Jew can go home” that would also be considered as a negative statement. It is certainly wrong, but not, however, as pejorative as, “and the kike can go home.” No one is condoning the statement that was made. He should also never have mentioned the president’s race. This was wrong and something that should never have been done. However, it is far different than the standard pejorative words that the JTA article seems to imply. Mordechai Ben David should apologize for the usage. The JTA should also apologize both for the unwarranted slur on the audience as well as the excess in its attack on Mordechai Ben David. How Did The Iranian “Ambassador” To Lebanon Lose An Eye In A Hezbollah Explosion?

Iranian Ambassador to Lebanon Mojtaba Amani suffered a fate similar to thousands of Hezbollah terrorists on Tuesday: his pager exploded in his face as he was reading the latest “message.” However, Amani’s injuries held a certain significance that the others didn’t – he was caught (literally) “red-handed” as being a member of a murderous terror group. A member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps told the New York Times that Amani had taken out the pager to read the message when it exploded in his face. He lost one eye and the other eye was severely wounded. He also suffered hand injuries. The report added that the IRGC sources said Amani’s injuries are more severe than initially reported and he will be evacuated to Tehran for medical treatment. Amani serves as a liaison between Tehran and Hezbollah and it is estimated that he even hosts Hezbollah meetings at the Iranian embassy. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Antisemitic Anti-Israel Rep. Ilhan Omar Wins Minnesota Primary

The virulently antisemitic and anti-Israel Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar won her Democratic party primary in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District on Tuesday, defeating her opponent Don Samuel and two other challengers. In her victory speech, Omar claimed that her black opponent Don Samuels, who is pro-Israel, worked with “literal Nazis” in order to defeat her.” Unfortunately, Omar did not follow in the paths of two of her fellow Squad members who lost their primaries – Reps. Jamaal Bowman in New York and Cori Bush of Missouri. AIPAC and other pro-Israel groups heavily aided the challengers of Bowman and Bush but the same support was not provided for Samuels as polls showed that Omar would be difficult to defeat. A pro-Israel campaign strategist told JTA last week that Samuels is ” a great pro-Israel guy, and she’s terrible, but she’s doing a real campaign and has for a long time. We did not see it as a race in which we could make a difference.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Report: New York’s “Within Our Lifetime” Is Linked To Numerous Antisemitic Attacks

The perpetrator who ordered “Zionists” to identify themselves on the New York subway and told them “this is your chance to get out” was identified overnight Wednesday by the antisemitism watchdog group Stop Antisemitism. According to a JTA article, Saleh and the pro-Hamas rioters who swarmed the subways on their way to a depraved protest outside an exhibit in Lower Manhattan memorializing the murdered and tortured victims of the Nova music festival massacre on October 7 are part of a pro-Hamas group called Within Our Lifetime, which was established in 2015 as NYC Students for Justice in Palestine. Protesters outside the exhibit flew Hezbollah and Hamas flags and one participant said to nearby Jews:  “I wish Hitler was still here. He would have wiped all of you out.” The group, which was responsible for regular anti-Israel allies even before October 7th, at which participants chanted for the destruction of Israel and called to “globalize the intifada,” is the leading anti-Israel group in NYC. JTA provided a detailed description of the group: Within Our Lifetime has spent years building its presence in New York City, becoming the leading pro-Palestinian activist organization in the region. The pace and intensity of the turmoil have spiked since October 7, shutting down public spaces in New York City, drawing repeated concern from elected officials and action from law enforcement as well as social media platforms. Within Our Lifetime is led by Nerdeen Kiswani, a Palestinian-American who grew up in Brooklyn. Kiswani drew major attention and criticism from Jewish groups in 2022 when she delivered a speech at the City University of New York Law School commencement in which she decried alleged “Zionist harassment by well-funded organizations with ties to the Israeli government and military.” The following year, another leader of the group, Fatima Mohammed, delivered CUNY Law’s commencement speech, accusing Israel of “indiscriminate” murder and lauding resistance to “Zionism around the world.” The remarks were condemned as hate speech by CUNY’s chancellor and prompted congressional legislation seeking to defund CUNY. CUNY Law canceled student speakers at commencement after the uproar. Kiswani says she has faced personal blowback because of her activism, telling the pro-Palestinian website Mondoweiss in 2022 that Jewish advocacy groups and individuals including the right-wing pundit Ben Shapiro had directed their followers to criticize her. “I helped start WOL because I felt there was a disconnect between what was happening on the ground in Palestine, and what organizers on campuses were calling for,” she told Mondoweiss. “The discussions and a lot of the things that supporters of Palestine were talking about in these academic spaces were not reflective of what the people on the ground are experiencing.” In March, Kiswani appeared at a Columbia University event where speakers praised Hamas. Kiswani also attended Columbia’s protest encampment in the spring and Within Our Lifetime urged followers to mass at that encampment and another at the City College of New York. The group has gained increased visibility since Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, which sparked the war in Gaza. On that day, Within Our Lifetime posted support on Instagram for the Hamas invasion, which killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took more than 250 hostages. “We must defend the Palestinian right to resist zionist settler violence and support Palestinian resistance in all its forms.

IDENTIFIED: NY Subway Perp Who Ordered “Zionists” To Raise Their Hands

The US-based organization that fights antisemitism, “Stop Antisemitism,” has identified the perpetrator who ordered “Zionists” to identify themselves on the New York subway and told them “this is your chance to get out.” “StopAntisemitism has successfully identified the perpetrator from the June 10th NYC subway incident as Anas (Ahmad) Saleh and have been working with NYPD and NYC Mayor’s since last Friday regarding Saleh,” the organization wrote on X. “NYPD is asking if you/someone you know has been a witness to any of the incidents involving Saleh, please call CrimeStoppers 800-577-8477 in order to ensure a successful prosecution!” The group also revealed that Saleh is/was a lab tech at the Weill Cornell Medicine Rhee Lab. The lab already removed his profile from their website but not before StopAntisemitism recorded a screenshot. According to a JTA article, Saleh and the pro-Hamas rioters who swarmed the subways were on the way to a depraved protest outside an exhibit in Lower Manhattan memorializing the murdered and tortured victims of the Nova music festival massacre on October 7 are part of a pro-Hamas group called Within Our Lifetime, which was established in 2015 as NYC Students for Justice in Palestine. RAISI IS DEAD: Iran’s President, Foreign Minister Confirmed Killed In Epic Helicopter Crash

It’s official: Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian are dead. The helicopter they were flying in over Iran’s East Azerbaijan province crashed in freezing, rugged terrain during atrocious weather conditions, including rain and dense fog, on Sunday afternoon local time. The search for Raisi and his sorry fellow helicopter riders took some 16 hours, with search-and-rescue teams struggling almost endlessly to locate the helicopter’s wreckage. Turkey eventually provided a reconnaissance drone to help find the missing helicopter, and the chopper was finally identified blasted to smithereens in a rocky, jagged area where the odds of survival after a crash, even a low impact one – especially for many hours – were exceedingly low. Raisi had been on the border with Azerbaijan early Sunday to inaugurate a dam with Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev. The dam is the third one that the two nations built on the Aras River. He was flying back from the ceremony in a three-helicopter convoy; the two other helicopter reached their destinations, while the one he and the foreign minister were in went missing, sparking a massive, frenzied – and ultimately dragged-out – search. The 63-year-old Raisi – who formerly led the country’s judiciary and earned the nickname “Butcher of Tehran” by sentencing thousands of Iranians to death in the 1980’s – was viewed as a protégé of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and many analysts had suggested he could replace the 85-year-old leader after Khamenei’s death or resignation. Raisi won Iran’s rigged presidential election in 2021, a vote that saw the lowest turnout in the Islamic Republic’s history. Raisi was sanctioned by the U.S. in part over his involvement in the mass execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988 at the end of the bloody Iran-Iraq war. Under Raisi, Iran enriched uranium at nearly weapons-grade levels and hampered international inspections. Under his watch, Iran armed Russia in its war on Ukraine, as well as launched a massive drone-and-missile attack on Israel amid its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. He also directed the continued arming proxy terrorist groups in the Mideast, like Yemen’s Houthi rebels and Lebanon’s Hezbollah, among many other. Meanwhile, mass protests in the country have raged for years. The most recent involved the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, a woman who had been earlier detained over allegedly not wearing a hijab, or headscarf, to the liking of authorities. The monthslong security crackdown that followed the demonstrations killed more than 500 people and saw over 22,000 detained. The sudden death of Raisi throws Iran into a state of uncertainty, as the country grapples with regional conflicts, economic woes, and a looming succession crisis. Iran is already engaged in a regional war involving direct military action and proxy conflicts. Its adversaries, including the United States, Israel, and Saudi Arabia, are considering strengthening their security ties to counter Iran’s influence. The Iranian economy is also facing significant challenges, with the potential for further sanctions from the United States. According to the Iranian constitution, a new presidential election must be held within 50 days, with Vice President Muhammad Mokhber assuming the presidency in the interim. However, Mokhber is seen as an apparatchik rather than a power player, and the real succession battle lies in the future. The Guardian Council, a group

Iran’s Currency Hits A Record Low, With 613,500 Rials Worth Just 1 Dollar

Iran’s currency fell to a record low on Sunday, plunging to 613,500 to the dollar, as its people celebrated the Persian New Year. On Sunday, people were trying to exchange rials for foreign currency at Tehran’s main hub of exchange shops in Ferdowsi Street, but most were closed due to the Nowruz holidays, which are run from March 20 to April 2. Mohsen, a 32-year-old employee at one of the exchange shops, said the holiday was contributing to the low prices, “The price is not real, the demand for purchasing dollars is very high, but there are just a few exchange shops open.” He and other Iranians spoke on condition their last names not be used, because of potential repercussions for speaking to foreign media about the country’s economic struggles. The two-week holiday is an opportunity to travel abroad, driving demand for U.S. dollars and Euros. Mojtaba, a 49-year-old father, was shocked: “The rial fell 5% compared to the last six days, while the whole country is on vacation!” Niloufar, 28-year-old wife and her husband Behzad, 30, said that they’d booked a weeklong tour of Turkey at a discount rate, but were now looking at spending as much as full-price tour. The exchange rate strongly affects other markets, including housing and rentals. The price was 590,000 to the dollar on March 18, the last workday before the holiday. Many Iranians have seen their life savings evaporate as the local currency has depreciated. Today, it’s worth about one-twentieth as much as it was in 2015, when Iran signed a nuclear accord with world powers. Since then, it’s fallen from 32,000 rials to the dollar to the hundreds of thousands. In February 2023, it briefly reached a nadir of 600,000 reals to the dollar, and since then has not risen above 439,000. The government’s Statistics Center put the country’s inflation rate for Feb. 2024 at 42.5%, while Central Bank said it was more than 46%. There is no explanation for the discrepancy. Iran’s relations with the west have been at exceptional lows since then-U.S. President Donald Trump abandoned a deal that called for the country to end its nuclear program in return for access to frozen funds and other benefits. President Joe Biden said he was willing to re-enter a nuclear deal with Iran, but formal talks to try to find a roadmap to restart the deal collapsed in August 2022. In the meantime, tensions in the Middle East have increased significantly, making nuclear diplomacy with Iran more complicated. Iran has further angered Western countries by supplying armed drones to Russia that have been used in its invasion of Ukraine. Dire economic conditions have contributed to widespread anger at the government in the past, but have also forced many Iranians to focus on putting food on the table rather than engaging in high-risk political activism amid a fierce crackdown on dissent. The rial’s record low came less than a month after a parliamentary election that saw the lowest turnout since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, whose results were dominated by hard-line politicians. Hard-liners have controlled the parliament for the past two decades — with chants of “Death to America” often heard during its sessions. (AP)

The Five Towns Far Rockaway Community Mourns an Extraordinary Torah Scholar

by Rabbi Yair Hoffman Last week, the Five Towns/Far Rockaway community lost a unique and extraordinary individual, Rabbi Dr. David Kadosh a”h. Rabbi Kadosh was a brilliant Talmid Chochom who studied in the Mir Yeshiva of Brooklyn under Rav Avrohom Kalmanovitch zt”l and Rav Shmuel Brudny zt”l and was known as the “ilui from Morocco.” Rabbi Kadosh was also an accomplished scholar with a PhD who taught at Yeshiva University and was fully fluent in Hebrew, English, French, a number of Arabic dialects and German. Some in the community remember him as giving the first Daf Yomi on the LIRR to Manhattan.  Others remember him as giving the first Daf Yomi shiur in Shaaray Tefillah.  And yet there were those who remember him as their all-knowing Machsheves Yisroel professor at Dov Revel Graduate School and at Yeshiva University. But everyone who knew him recalled him as a remarkable mentsch who exhibited the apogee of ehrlichkeit and a Baal Mussar extraordinaire. He received his PhD in 1969 and his dissertation dealt with Rabbi Moshe Narvone’s commentary on Al Ghazali’s  Kavanot. BIRTH AND EARLY HISTORY Rabbi Kadosh was born in 1935 in Demnate, a town in central Morocco, located at the foot of the high Atlas Mountains roughly 110 km east of Marrakech. This had a downside and an upside.  The downside is that Denbate was prone to earthquakes.  The upside was that the city is surrounded by beautiful mountains and close to natural attractions, including the natural land bridge Iminifery, and the Ouzoud Falls. Tragically, Rabbi Kadosh lost his mother when he was four years old.  His aunt, who loved her sister’s children immensely did not wish that a step-mother would raise her.  She took it upon herself to raise her nephews herself and married her former brother-in-law.  Rabbi Abuchatzerah who knew her well would describe her as an absolute tzaddeikes. GATESHEAD AND MIR The young Rav David was very much taken with the works of the Rambam.  Recognized as a genius at a very young age, it was decided that a young Rabbi Dovid Kadosh should go to Gateshead England to study under Reb Leib Gurwich, a Talmid of the Brisker Rav and the Mir Yeshiva in Poland.  Rav Gurwich eventually authored the Roshei She’arim, now a classic collection of Talmudic discourses and shiurim. After a year, he transferred to the Mir Yeshiva in Brooklyn and became quite close to Rav Avrohom Kalmanovitch zt”l who was credited with saving the entire Mir Yeshiva in Poland when they travelled through the Soviet heartland to Japan and then onto Shanghai. He referred to Rav Kalmanovitch as the Rav.”  Rav Kadosh also became close to Rav Shmuel Brudny zt”l whose shiurim he savored greatly. While studying in Mir he continued his studies of the Rambam and was captivated not only by the Rambam’s Mishna Torah but also by his Moreh Nevuchim.  He taught himself to be extremely proficient in English, German, Yiddish and various dialects of Arabic.  He attended Brooklyn College in the evenings and earned his bachelors and masters degrees from there. Rav Kalmanovitch was so enamoured by his young prodigy that he would take Rav Dovid with him on fundraising visits and referred to him as the Ilui from Moroccos.  Rav Kalmanovitch also recruited other talmidim from Morocco who felt very

Popular Website Confirms Frum Man’s Account Of Feigned Discrimination Story On Flight

Channel 13 News journalist Neria Kraus posted a false story on Wednesday to millions of Twitter users. The story was quickly picked up by left-wing media outlets who broadcast the story to millions more. The story was revealed as false by blogger Daniel Amram and the actual version of events was published by right-wing media outlets. But of course, the damage was already done and left-wing media outlets are reluctant to pull such a juicy story involving hot topics such as “Chareidim” and “religious discrimination against women” that somehow must be spurred by “Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s extremist and Messianic partners.” Even the English-language JTA published the story on Wednesday with the headline: Israeli Journalist Says Haredi Orthodox Men Discriminated Against Her On A United Flight. Dan from the popular DansDeals website decided to investigate the story and confirmed the reporter’s lies and distortions. He spoke with the frum man, Nigel M. (who prefers that his full name not be published), whom the reporter attempted to publicly shame. Nigel, a businessman originally from London who lives in Brooklyn, confirmed the version of events he told Amram in the video. Dan then spoke with two witnesses (as accounted below), and later updated the story by writing: “The story below has now been corroborated by multiple witnesses.” “I just spoke with Sol and Eva C. who were seated in seats 46E and 46F,” Dan wrote. “They were among the first on the plane in economy and saw what happened from the beginning. “They corroborate what I heard from Nigel by confirming that they heard Neria initially agree to switch seats, before taking it back after Nigel removed his baseball cap to reveal his yarmulka. “Sol described Neria Kraus totally blowing up at that point and she was feverishly working throughout the flight to spread news of an incident that never happened. “When a flight attendant came over to Neria in middle of the flight, she told him that she thought ‘the haredi’ was bad, but United was even worse! “They confirm there was no discrimination whatsoever and Neria went ballistic for no reason other than to create a scene. The entire time Nigel remained a complete and polite gentleman. “The sad part is, millions have already seen the other side from a clearly biased reporter, and the now multiple witnesses coming forward will never get a chance to be heard.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

They ARE Amazing Geonim

They ARE Amazing Geonim On the Entire Shas – from Beginning to End By Rabbi Eliezer Sandler The six Shas Yiden kollelim, including the London UK kollel, with their 102 geonim metzuyonim recently gathered in Yerushalayim for a ‘block buster’ farher. It was nothing short of amazing as shown in the links below. The astonishment on everyone’s lips was “How do they do it? How can anyone know the entire Shas, let alone the page numbers and on which line? And so many of them, all at once!?” Maranan Hagaonim shlit”a, Harav Yitzchak Shaul Kanievsky and Harav Nissan Kaplan put the Shas Yiden to the test. “The Kanievsky Farher” (https://shasyiden.com/farher/ Farher 2023 Kwasniewski) Maran Hagaon Harav Yitzchak Shaul Kanievsky, shlit”a, has followed his father’s footsteps in testing the Shas Yiden avreichim geonim. The farher is indicative of the vastness of the Shas Yiden knowledge. Even though he has farhered the Shas Yiden previously and has sat in on his father’s farheren, Rav Yitzchak Shaul expressed his appreciation of their prowess is no less than did his illustrious father. “The Kaplan Farher” (https://shasyiden.com/farher/  Farher 2023 Kaplan) Maran Hagaon Harav Nissan Kaplan, shlit”a, Rosh Hayeshiva Daas Aaron, presented the Shas Yiden with a plethora of detailed questions from across the entire Shas. The responses were a veritable tsunami of yedias Torah she’b’al peh. The thorough enjoyment of the avreichim geonim was clear. Their toiling in limud Hatorah was appreciated by the crowd that was present. “Reb Meilech Biderman” A rare treat for all present was Maran, Hamashpia Hagadol, ‘Reb Meilech’ Biderman, shlit”a. His speech was both dramatic and riveting. He emphasized the accomplishment of the Shas Yiden and the incredible contribution that they are making to the Torah world. They have certainly raised the bar and revolutionized limud haShas. The ebb and flow of his words highlighted the greatness of Torah that the avreichim geonim were all achieving. Incredible Accomplishment In just 14 years, through the Shas Yiden Kollel Network, the ability to know Gemorah and Rishonim in detail, and the concept of being a metzuyan has taken a giant leap forward. To be accepted at Shas Yiden, each avreich metzuyan is expected to know and be tested on 450 blatt! Following a most demanding curriculum and regimen, studying 9 blatt a day – five times – and with every Rashi and Tosfos, they will know the entire Shas. All this will be further honed to ensure mastery of the entire Talmud down to which page and line the matter can be found. No Vacation Days – Not even Shabbos and Yom Tov Yes, the Shas Yiden avreichim are required to learn every day of the year. The only easing of the regimen is that the amount to be accomplished on Shabbos and Yom Tov and the days preceding them is that the quantity is halved. To ensure that no one falls behind there are regular questions to be answered and every month they all undergo written examinations of 225 blatt! Gedolei Torah have remarked that never, since the creation of the Talmud by Ravina and Rav Ashi, has there been such a demanding curriculum for an entire student body – from the great academies in Babylon and through to Europe and Ashkenaz. And this applies to each of the Shas Yiden kollelim. It is no wonder that the Sar Hatorah, Maran Hagaon Hagadol Harav Chaim Kanievsky, zt”l, loved hearing, testing and speaking to the Shas Yiden avreichim when they would

What Has Happened to Us? The Burger Within Us

By Rabbi Yair Hoffman for 5tjt.com It was shocking JTA article.  The article touted a new kosher restaurant with a “24K Gold Plated Golden-Burger.”  The price? $175. The article describes the burger –  a 12-ounce short-rib burger wrapped in leaves of real, 24-karat gold, grilled and topped with black Australian truffle, crunchy onions and chips, house-made sauce and pickles. It is brought to the table in a custom hand-carved wood treasure chest, which will be opened at the table, triggering a smoke show and illuminating its contents. This burger is a paradigm, reflective of where we are going, as a society, and  even in our own society. What has happened to us?  We spend enormous amounts of money on lavish Bar Mitzvahs and weddings.  We buy and build mega-mansions and cars and designer label clothing to an excess – where seemingly there is no purpose other than to show off wealth – a consumption of a conspicuous type. How have we, a nation that was once so spiritually elevated, once so pure of heart – succumbed to such consumptive behavior, reflected in this $125 burger sandwich?  How have we become so materialistic? To understand what has happened to us we need to understand what the term, “materialism” actually means.  Materialism means that the only thing in our reality that truly exists and matters is material matter and the acquisition of it.  It is the opposite of “ain od milvado,” Shlomo HaMelech’s understanding of Hashem and our role in life as expressed in Koheles (1:2).   Plainly stated, we are in a battle – no mere skirmish or class but a battle for our very souls called: “Ain Od Milvado versus Materialism.” OUR INNER MOTIVATIONS And, oh, in this battle there are so many nuances of motivations that have enveloped and darkened our neshamos as revealed in this JTA article. Are we so shallow that we are telling the world in either a macro or micro sense that we have personally arisen from poverty and have made it?  And for this end, have we entirely thrown frugality and common sense to the wind?  Has this motivation of “yetzias anius” replaced “yetzias mitzrayim? Or is our motivation for spending, spending, and more spending on useless, useless, and more useless items predicated upon an identity crisis of sorts – some hard-to-place yearning of a personal identity?  Is it that deep inside the inner recesses of our minds and hearts, we don’t know who we are and what we stand for, and that is why we buy the latest SUV or iPhone or Galaxy 15 or Galaxy Juneteenth? And, do we then therefore we opt for “superior social status”  as our go-to self-definition? Moshe Rabbeinu is described by Hashem Himself as “Avdi Moshe.”  Our true identity should be that we are Ovdei Hashem – we emulate Him by emulating His Midos.  We are Baalei Chessed.  We are Baalei Emes.  But, if we do not self-define in this manner, we just go to our “comfort-food” of personal identity – our chocolate ice cream in the freezer. Is this vast ostentatious display of wealth and materialism just a mere checking off the box of “superior social status” in the universal search for personal identity? A third possibility is that we so much need and crave the approval

Iranian Commander: “We”ll Kidnap Netanyahu And Enslave Him In Iran”

Mojtaba Fada, the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the city of Isfahan said on Sunday that Iran will kidnap Netanyahu and bring him to Iran in a slave collar. Speaking at a funeral for government security officials killed in the course of quelling anti-regime protests, Fada placed the blame for the public uprising on Iran’s foes such as Israel and the US. “The former prime minister of the Zionist regime hopes that the protest will lead him to being able to travel to Tehran [if the government is overthrown], but G-d willing, the Islamic Republic will prevail and we’ll bring him to Iran with his hands tied and a [slave] collar around his neck after the destruction of the child-killing regime of Israel,” he said. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on Tuesday described the situation in Iran as critical, saying that the regime’s harsh response to the protests has resulted in over 300 deaths in the past two months. “The rising number of deaths from protests in Iran, including those of two children at the weekend, and the hardening of the response by security forces, underline the critical situation in the country,” he said. Fear Grows For Jews Living In Russian-Occupied Ukraine

Many Jews from Ukrainian cities now in Russian-occupied areas are worried about their relatives who remained behind, JTA reported. Many left behind elderly parents who could not or would not leave when their children did. “We can’t talk about the war,” said Moshe, whose elderly mother is in Kherson, a city in southern Ukraine that has been occupied by the Russians since early in the war. “I don’t want to make things difficult for her. I think that people are listening in.” Moshe is currently in Vinnytsia, a town in western Ukraine. “She doesn’t want to leave,” he adds. “It is not because the Russians are there now that she wants to stay. She wants to stay because it is her home.” Moshe’s friend Igor also left behind his parents – in Berdyansk, a town currently occupied by Russian forces. “I speak to them when I can,” he said. “There isn’t always a signal.” Igor added that according to his parents, the Russian occupation has become more oppressive over time. “If you are standing around smoking, they come up to you to check your documents and question you. They ask you what you are doing there and why you are hanging around. They come and ask you for money and if you don’t cooperate, they take your children and demand a ransom.” “There are maybe around 100 Jews left in Berdyansk,” said Igor. “But they are only old people – all the young ones have left.” JTA spoke to Jews from all four areas annexed by Russia but none of them with were willing to be interviewed under their full name due to fear of possible consequences. Disturbing evidence of torture and murder has been found in Russian-occupied areas that were reclaimed by Ukrainian forces. Igor said that he doesn’t believe that Jewish identity in Russian-occupied areas has any effect. “Nationality doesn’t matter for the Russians. For them, these people are not people, they are animals.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Erdogan Tells Jewish Leaders He Will Visit Israel, Says Antisemitism Is ‘Crime Against Humanity’

In the latest step of warmed tied between Turkey and Israel, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a group of Jewish leaders on Monday in New York he plans on visiting Israel, JTA reported on Monday evening. Erdogan, who is in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, met with American and Turkish Jewish leaders in a meeting arranged by the Turkish embassy and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. The Turkish leader, who did not specify when he would visit the Jewish state, also said at the meeting that that antisemitism is a “crime against humanity.” Prime Minister Yair Lapid, who flew to New York on Monday evening, is scheduled to meet with Erdogan on the sidelines of the General Assembly – the first meeting of the leaders of the two countries since 2008. On Monday, Israel announced the appointment of a new ambassador to Turkey, the first since 2018. Erdogan has a history of making virulent statements against Israel, including calling Israel a “terrorist state” and Israelis “child killing bloodsuckers” as well as providing a safe haven for Hamas members, including those actively involved in financing and planning terror operations against Israel. He even granted citizenship to 12 Hamas terrorists, one of whom has been designated by the US as a terrorist and has a $5 million bounty on his head. In recent months, Erdogan made a decision to repair ties with a number of countries, including Israel, and under pressure from Jerusalem, took steps to expel members of Hamas’s military wing from the country. President Isaac Herzog visited Turkey in March and last month, the two countries announced they plan on restoring full diplomatic ties. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Agudath Israel Statement on New York Times’ Attack on Hasidic Community

Agudath Israel of America decries today’s one-sided New York Times hit piece on New York State’s Hasidic community and its educational institutions. The article is riddled with bias, ignoring the vast majority of Hasidic parents – those who cherish their yeshivas – instead citing a minority of people who have rejected the community’s values, and passing them off as representative of the whole. The true viewpoint of the tens of thousands of parents who send their children to Hasidic schools is represented, in part, by the recent historic 350,000 letters during the state’s public comment period, the vast majority of which pleading for no interference with the yeshiva educational system for which they pay and value. Could the New York Times not speak to one of those parents? In this article, everything beautiful is turned ugly. While challenging college classes are lauded in society, our disciplined, rigorous, and intellectually challenging Torah studies are denigrated. Disgusting innuendo abounds. The supposed poverty data, which form the foundation of much of the piece, have been debunked so many times as to become tiresome. And then there are the outright falsehoods, too many to list, being cataloged now by writers, fact-checkers, and defamation lawyers. There are certainly some who have had poor experiences in a yeshiva. But the New York Times has written a piece that could find almost nothing positive in a community that has raised generations of successful entrepreneurs, professionals, and blue-collar workers. Generations of successful human beings – even if success is defined in purely material terms. Hasidic communities are models of safety and commerce, with low crime, suicide, and drug abuse rates. Our communities are focused on pursuits of knowledge, family values, kindness, and service to G-d and to others. We await, in vain, for a New York Times article on that.

Agudath Israel Statement On Updated Substantial Equivalency Regulations

Agudath Israel remains deeply concerned that the state is moving forward with its plan to intrude upon and regulate the curriculum of private schools. The specter of government overriding the will of parents and dictating how and what we teach in our private, religious schools is frightening. Agudath Israel also notes the inclusion in the 142-page document released today of significant discussion addressing many of the comments submitted. Our legal team is continuing to study the Regulations and the discussion included therein to determine its impact upon the New York yeshiva community. We also note the Regulation’s inclusion of several alternate pathways described in the Regulations, which provide avenues for private schools to be deemed equivalent and avoid the need for intrusive and subjective local authority inspections. We have opposed government intrusion in our schools many times, and fought prior incarnations of the Regulations in court, in Albany, and, together with the broader Orthodox community and many others as part of the first and second public comment periods. We will continue to fight on behalf of our community to protect the autonomy of private, religious schools, as needed. The Regulations are slated to be voted upon by the Board of Regents on Tuesday.

Spanish Town Previously Called ‘Fort Kill The Jews’ Hit With Antisemitic Graffiti

A tiny village in Spain that bore the name “Fort Kill the Jews” from 1627 until 2015 was sprayed with anti-Semitic graffiti on Wednesday ahead of a Jewish family moving in, JTA reported. According to an El País report, a Jewish family is planning on soon moving into the village, joining another Jewish family that moved there earlier this year – the first Jews to do so since medieval times. The word Auschwitz was sprayed on one of the village’s signs, the name “Fort Kill the Jews” was sprayed on a sign leading into the town, and several garage containers throughout the village were lit on fire. The town was originally called Castrillo Motajudíos, or Jew’s Hill Fort, in 1035 – when Jews fleeing a pogrom settled in the village. It was renamed “Fort Kill The Jews” in 1627 when the Inquisition was at the height of its religious persecution of Spanish Jewry. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Lufthansa To Appoint Antisemitism Monitor After Banning 127 Frum Jews From Flight

Lufthansa Airlines is creating a senior management position dedicated to the prevention of antisemitism and discrimination several months after an entire group of frum Jews was discriminated against for the behavior of a few individuals, JTA reported. The incident occurred in May when a large group of chassidim was scheduled to fly from Germany to Hungary to visit the kever of Reb Shayale, zt”l, in Kerestir. One or two of the passengers became involved in a conflict with the crew over the airline’s mask mandate, and in response, the staff banned all Jews from catching their connecting flights. Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr subsequently apologized to the Rav of Berlin Rabbi Yehudah Teichtal for the incident, which he said “should not have happened.” However, according to an independent investigation commissioned by the airline, there is no evidence that the incident was the result of institutional antisemitism. IT’S OFFICIAL: Rav Goldschmidt No Longer Moscow’s Chief Rabbi: “I’m Leaving A Community In Distress”

Rav Pinchas Goldschmidt, who left Russia after refusing to express support for the war in Ukraine, has been formally removed from his 29-year tenure as the chief rabbi of Moscow, JTA reported. The Moscow Jewish Religious Society, which represents Rav Goldschmidts’s former congregation and office, told the Russian news outlet RBC on Wednesday that Rav Goldschmidt no longer has a role there, although he has not been fired. “The contract has ended…there is no question of successors, perhaps there will be none,” Olga Yessaulova, a spokesperson for the group, told RBC. A source with knowledge of the community told JTA that the community did not renew Rav Goldschmidt’s contract partially out of safety concerns. JTA spoke with Rav Goldschmidt but he chose not to discuss the events that led him to leave Russia. “As I say goodbye to Moscow and Russia, I am thinking especially of one man: Albert Reichmann, who proposed me for the post of chief rabbi and who had faith in me that I would be able to fulfill that great responsibility,” he said. “I am leaving a community in distress. But from the outside, I will do my utmost to help my beloved community.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Pastor Who Prayed For 2nd Holocaust Gets 18-Year Prison Sentence

A Brazilian court sentenced a pastor to an 18.5-year prison sentence for praying for another Holocaust, an unprecedented penalty that captured headlines throughout Brazil, JTA reported. Judge Valeria Caldi Magalhães said: “The defendant used his condition as pastor of a religious community” to commit a crime, “which increases the potential to induce followers to act similarly.” She added: “With regard to social conduct, the records showed that the defendant maintains an ostensible behavior that confronts public institutions.” Ricardo Sidi, legal director of the Brazilian Israelite Confederation, responded to the ruling by stating: “A historic sentence in the fight against anti-Semitism. It is the largest penalty applied in Brazil for this type of crime, which will help to inhibit this odious practice.” Pastor Tupirani da Hora Lores was caught on video last year praying that G-d should “destroy the Jews like vermin.” A Jewish group discovered an online video of da Hora Lores leading his congregation in shouting “Massacre the Jews, G-d, hit them with your sword, for they have left G-d, they have left the nations.” “G-d, what you have done in World War II, you must do again, this is what we ask for in our prayers to you: Justice, justice, justice!” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Not All Jews In Turkey Are Heeding Israel’s Warnings

Report after report in recent days described extremely frightening encounters Israeli tourists experienced in Istanbul, following multiple warnings by Israeli security organizations about Iranian cells seeking to kidnap and murder Israelis. But it seems as if Turkish Jews and many Israeli tourists are living their lives as usual on the street of Istanbul, JTA reported. Chabad Rav, Rabbi Mendy Chitrik, Turkey’s Ashkenazi chief rabbi who speaks with dozens of Israeli tourists on a weekly basis, said he was inundated with messages from Israeli tourists and local expats in the past week. “When people call me, and ask me if they should come, I say they should refer to the security instructions of their government and try to comply with that,” he said. But he said that he’s noticed little change on the streets. “I walk on the streets of Nisantasi [a popular shopping district in Istanbul], and still hear Israelis speaking.” Chitrik added that although he has no knowledge of how many Israelis canceled their flights to Turkey due to the warnings, as the director of the kosher supervision in Turkey, he knows that there has been no decrease in the number of kosher meals ordered for flights landing in Turkey. Amid the ongoing security situation, Foreign Minister Yair Lapid traveled to Ankara on Thursday to meet with his Turkish counterpart Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Will War in Ukraine Cause a Shmurah Matzah Shortage in the US?

Just hours before 20,000 pounds of shmurah matzah baked in Odesa, Ukraine, were to be loaded onto ships and brought to Jews in the United States, Russia commenced its war against its neighboring country. In total, some 180,000 pounds of matzah were baked in Ukraine and shipped out to America, which accounts for 15% to 20% of the number of shmurah matzos consumed in the United States. However, the final 20,000 pounds are unable to get out of the Ukrainian port. “I think the U.S. market will feel it,” Rabbi Meyer Stambler, head of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine told JTA. “I think we are probably going to have a deficit og shmurah matzah this year.” The good news is that most matzah baked abroad has already made it to the United States, lessening the risk of a severe shortage. However, with worldwide logistics snarled and gas prices rising, the end-user cost of matzah is shooting up as well, with some stores selling a pound of matzos for an eye-popping $85 a pound. BDE: Ukrainian Jew From Kharkiv Killed In Battle

Serafim Sabaranskiy, z’l, a Jewish Ukrainian, was killed in action on Sunday when a Russian missile landed near his position, JTA reported. Sabaranskiy, 29, was an active member of the Kharkiv branch of Hillel. Unlike the US, where Hillel is affiliated with universities, in Ukraine and other countries, Hillel centers are Jewish community centers for young adults into their thirties. Yuliya Pototska, the director of the Kharkiv Hillel branch, [which has been destroyed by Russian bombs], told JTA that Sabaranskiy was an active participant in local Jewish life. and traveled to Israel on a Hillel-sponsored Birthright trip two years ago. This is what is left of the Hillel in Kharkiv that I spent a summer volunteering at. Devastating and Infuriating. Sending so much love to our Ukrainian brothers & sisters!! #Ukraine #Jewish #HillelInternational pic.twitter.com/WE0eBaN6n3 — Rabbi Shmuly (@RavShmuly) March 2, 2022 Ironically and tragically, Sabaranskiy’s mother is an ardent supporter of Putin and moved from Kharkiv to Russia after its annexation of Crimea in 2014, Pototska said. In fact, her belief in Putin is so strong that she refuses to believe that her son was killed by a Russian strike, instead blaming Ukraine’s own government as she believes that the Russians invaded Ukraine to save the people from “Nazi persecution.” We are heartbroken to share that Serafim, a student at Kharkiv Hillel, has been killed defending Ukraine. We are sharing our love and our prayers with Sefarim’s family and friends. He died a hero. 💙 May his memory always be a blessing and a comfort. pic.twitter.com/P3Sg7WP8KI — Hillel (@HillelIntl) March 15, 2022 Yehi Zichro Baruch. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

“How Do I Become Jewish?” Ukrainian Refugee Jokes

Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian refugees have been standing in lines in the freezing cold at Moldovan border crossings in recent days, with about 230,000 Ukrainians thought to have entered Moldova since February 24. Few wish to stay in Moldova. About 150,000 refugees already crossed into Romania, from where they can travel to various countries in Europe. A JTA reporter spoke to refugees from Odessa – Jewish and non-Jewish – who had just crossed the Moldovan border on six buses organized by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and will soon be continuing to Bucharest, Romania. Sofia, one of the Jewish refugees from Odessa, told JTA that she is taking her elderly aunt out of Ukraine but after her aunt is settled, she intends to return to Odessa where her husband remains due to the mandatory draft order. The JTA reporter asked what she thinks of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s claim that he is “denazifying” Ukraine and she responded by gesturing to the people nearby, mostly Jews. “Look around you! Do you see this?” “Very many Jews are leaving Odessa but every single one that I know says that they are already dreaming of when they can come back,” she said. Vlada Ignatieve, 27, also entered Moldova on the buses organized by Odessa’s Jewish community and she hopes to travel to Switzerland. “I am not Jewish, but today when I went down to the synagogue to catch the bus, I really felt like I was with my community,” she said. “How do I become Jewish?” she laughed. Istanbul Airport: Kosher Food Now Available For Hungry Travelers

A new kosher vending machine is now available for kosher consumers in Istanbul Airport, Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA) reported. Istanbul Airport is one of Europe’s busiest airports, serving almost 40 million people in 2021, but up to last month, there were no kosher options for travelers, who often have to spend long hours in the airport waiting for connecting flights or due to schedule changes or canceled flights. The Kosher Food Point Machine, installed last month, now offers sandwiches and drinks, and hot kosher meals are sold in some of the airport’s lounges. The food is certified by OU Kosher as well by the local Denet Gida, a branch of the Turkish Rabbanut. The food is provided by the La Casa caterer, which donates the proceeds to poor Jewish families in Turkey. Rabbi Mendy Chitrik, Turkey’s Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi, helped organize the arrangement. “There are more flights to Tel Aviv than to London,” he told JTA. “It’s definitely a very important hub where hundreds of thousands of kosher-eating Jews pass through, and sometimes they stop over, sometimes they get stuck.” Rabbi Chitrik said that the arrangement takes a huge weight off his shoulders as hungry kosher travelers often called him in search of kosher food. “For many years I had the habit of bringing kosher food with me every time I went to the airport, to give out to people there,” he said. After one too many of these incidents, he expressed his frustration in a tweet in November: “Why is there no Kosher food available in the Istanbul Airport?” he wrote. “Every time I fly – I bring with me food for stranded and hungry Jews who missed their flight. Isn’t it time for Istanbul Airport and Turkish Airlines to assure that Kosher food is available for purchase and in the lounge?” Why is there no Kosher food available in the Istanbul Airport? Everytime I fly – I bring with me food for stranded & hungry Jews who missed their flight. Isn't it time for @igairport and @TurkishAirlines to assure that Kosher food is available for purchase and in the lounge? — Rabbi Mendy Chitrik (@mchitrik) November 10, 2021 Rabbi Chitrik was shocked when airport authorities actually reached out to him and helped him arrange the provision of kosher food at the airport. Rabbi Chitrik said that not only does the initiative help hungry Jewish travelers but it’s a positive sign of coexistence. “It’s a statement of comfort, of welcoming, of tolerance and coexistence,” Chitrik said. “And that’s a good thing. It’s a sign of the normalization of Jewish life in the Muslim world.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Kazakhstan’s Chief Rabbi: “Jews Are Sitting Out The Conflict”

Following the tragic report of an Israeli shot to death on Friday night amid violent protests in Kazakhstan, a senior Foreign Ministry official said there is no plan to evacuate Israelis from the country. Gary Koren, the deputy head of the Eurasia and West Balkans division of the Foreign Ministry, told Army Radio on Sunday morning that diplomatic officials believe that the situation in Kazakhstan is now under control. “The Internet is mostly back and stores and gas stations are beginning to open,” Koren said. “There are several dozen Israelis who traveled there to study or work and we’re in touch with them.” Koren added that the body of Levan Kogeshvili, z’l, is still in Kazakhstan as the airport there is still closed. Koren emphasized that Israel has good relations with Kazakhstan, including political and economic ties, and that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayeve visited Israel when he served as foreign minister. JTA reported that the Jewish community in Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, has ceased all its activities. Rav Yeshaya Cohen, the country’s chief rabbi and Chabad shaliach, told JTA on Friday that members of the Jewish community are sitting out the conflict and staying at home until the situation stabilizes. Rav Cohen said that there are eight shuls in the country and all have suspended their activities. Rav Cohen added that Jews and their property have not been harmed. Sadly, the situation dramatically changed only hours later with the death of Kogeshvilia, z’l. Zeev Levin, head of the Bukharian Jews research unit at Jerusalem’s Yad Ben Zvi Institute and an expert on Central Asia, told JTA that the risk of attacks on Jews or Jewish sites during the protests is almost nonexistent as the rate of antisemitism is low in the country. ”Even throughout the most vicious of civil wars that have ripped Central Asian republics in recent decades, Jewish heritage sites were largely left alone,” Levin said. Kazakhstan is home to approximately 3,300 Jews, according to the World Jewish Congress. Most Jews live in Almaty but smaller Jewish communities are scattered in a number of cities and villages throughout the country. (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

The Kosher Airline Meal Depicted in the American Airlines Story

By Rabbi Yair Hoffman for 5tjt.com Recently, the JTA reported that a judge in Brazil fined American Airlines $1,759 for not providing kosher meals for two passengers who were told that they would receive it on long-distance flights.  The picture of the roll in the kosher meal used by one of the websites had a huge wrapper indicating that the roll was mezonos. Our question is one of the halacha.  What is the story with reciting a mezonos on these rolls?  In order to understand the underlying issues, we need to understand four things: The three definitions of something called Pas HaBa B’Kisnin or PHB. We also need to understand what the term “sweet-tasting” means. We need to identify whether the three definitions of PHB are mutually exclusive or not And lastly, we need to understand who we hold to have the authoritative word in halacha. WHAT EXACTLY IS PHB? There is a well-known three-way halachic debate as to the actual definition of Pas HaBa B’kisnin. Rabbeinu Chananel explains that Pas HaBa B’Kisnin is to be identified as bread made in the shape of a filled pocket. It contains some other item aside from the dough product itself – a filling that is both separate and distinct. An example would be a blueberry banana calzone.  It should be noted that spices such as cinnamon and sugar that are added after the baking process do not effect any change in bracha according to all three views. The Rambam and Rashi identify Pas HaBa B’Kisnin as a type of bread in which the dough was mixed with either spices or sweets. An example would be a cupcake. A cupcake’s dough is made with sweets such as sugar or honey added to the basic water and flour. The Aruch citing Rav Hai Gaon is of the opinion that the term “kisnin” comes from the word “koses” – chewing. According to him, Pas HaBa B’Kisnin is a cracker-like item that breaks apart and is generally chewed upon – perhaps similar to a hard pretzel or a cracker. An example, for our purposes, would be crackers. THE SWEET-TASTING DEBATE In Shulchan Aruch (OC 168:7) we find a debate about the Rambam’s and Rashi’s view between the Mechaber and the Ramah.  The Mechaber writes that the taste of the juice or additives have to be nikar – detectable.  The Ramah writes that the additives must be so significantly sweet that that the honey should be the main part. Many Poskim say that one doesn’t place butter on honey cake – so the bakers want it to seem to be a roll not a cake and that fact knocks out the possibility of making a hamotzi.  This seems to be the view of the Mishna Brurah as well. MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE OR NOT QUESTION Rav Yoseph Karo, in his Beis Yosef commentary on the Tur, writes that since there is a debate on the matter, we apply the concept of “safek brachos lehakel – that whenever there is a question regarding blessings we are lenient.”  Thus, all three types are to be considered Mezonos, unless one has established his meal on it. We would thus make a mezonos on a blue-berry banana calzone, a cupcake and crackers. So for Sefardim, unless they established their meal on it –

ANTI-YESHIVA: Incoming NYC Comptroller Brad Lander Says He Will Push Yeshivas to Teach Secular Subjects

New York City’s incoming comptroller, Brad Lander, said that he would use all of his power and resources to force yeshivas into teaching secular curriculum. “The state law is very clear that all schools, including private and parochial schools, have an obligation to deliver substantially comparable and competent secular education, especially where the city is contracting with those schools for transportation and books,” Lander, who is a Jew, told the JTA. “It is a responsibility of the city as a whole and the comptroller in particular to be paying attention and audit and make sure those obligations are being met,” he added. The issue of teaching secular subjects in yeshivas has been a matter of heated debate in recent years. On one side are a group of people who say that yeshivas have the obligation to teach secular subjects, while on the other side, many say that the law infringes on the religious freedoms of yeshivas to determine what subjects are appropriate to teach their students. As comptroller, Lander will have the power to audit yeshivas and determine whether they are meeting state requirements for secular subjects, though he noted that he does not have the power to force them to change their curricula. “This is critical,” Lander said, speaking to the New York Jewish Agenda, a liberal group he co-founded. “Making sure that all our schools, including our yeshivas, provide the education that our kids need and deserve is part of our job together and one that I’m going to be spending time on.” Lander also noted that the district he served for a decade as a city councilmember prior to being elected comptroller, has a large number of non-frum, liberal Jews as well as some frum ones. “My district has the Jews on probably the furthest left of the spectrum and the furthest right of the spectrum in New York City,” he said. “I love my [Jewish] practice. That said, I have been enriched as an elected official and as a Jew by my engagement with our frum cousins.” Not a word from Comptroller-elect Lander about the abysmal state of NYC's public schools, where (outside of Park Slope) children struggle for an education and fear for their lives on a daily basis. But, by all means, target yeshivas.https://t.co/tjLm65BkdT via @jtanews — Kalman Yeger (@KalmanYeger) December 19, 2021 (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Rabbi versus ex-Asst. Rabbi – The Park East Synagogue:  A Halachic Analysis

By Rabbi Yair Hoffman for 5tjt.com What follows is a halachic analysis of a developing story concerning a prominent synagogue in Manhattan’s Upper East Side.  We will see that, generally, speaking there are prohibitions involved in opening up a rival business in close proximity to another existing business.  We will also see that the prohibition does not necessarily apply to Torah competition because of the principle of “kinas sofrim tarbeh chochma- competition among scholars causes proliferation of Torah wisdom.”  But we will also see that there are exceptions to the application of this concept as well. Of course, as in all matters of halacha, a person should always ask his own Rav or Posaik for specific guidance. THE BACKGROUND The Park East Synagogue in Manhattan’s Upper East Side is probably one of the most prominent and flagship Modern Orthodox synagogues in the nation.  It’s Rabbi, Rabbi Arthur Schneier, is a sixth generation Rabbi.  Last month, its assistant Rabbi, Rabbi Benjamin Goldschmidt, was fired.  Rabbi Goldschmidt’s Rebbitzen is a prominent reporter and writer who often writes for the Forward, also a prominent institution (and a rival of the Five Towns Jewish Times). And now, at least for the second time, Rabbi Goldschmidt has held a rival service, a mere three blocks away from the Park East Synagogue. Apparently, the issue is so huge, that it has even become a JTA story. According to the JTA story, Rabbi Goldschmidt had recently sent an invitation that invited people to a Shabbos morning service with lunch to follow at an elite event space a few blocks away from the Park East Synagogue. The invitation list also included members of Rabbi Schneier’s shul. The JTA has further reported that approximately 80 people have already RSVPed for the Parshas Toldos service.  “We are embarking on a new journey,” the invitation reads, “Join us for Shabbat Parshat Toldot. We look forward to seeing you!” According to the JTA, both Rabbi Schneier and Rabbi Goldschmidt have laywered up.  Hank Sheinkopf, a political consultant acting as a spokesperson for Rabbi Schneier, told the JTA that he feels Rabbi Goldschmidt is trying to “undermine Rabbi Schneier and undermine the community for his own self interest.” Rabbi Goldschmidt’s attorney, Daniel Kurtz, told JTA that Rabbi Goldschmidt was organizing the service because he intended to continue his work in the community he’s called home for 10 years.  “This is where he lives and where he’s a rabbi. This is his natural constituency. He’s not going to move to Greenwich, Connecticut, and start inviting people.” THE HALACHA REGARDING A BUSINESS Let’s imagine for a moment that we were not discussing a shul, but rather a popular Israeli Kosher Gourmet Market.  What would be the halacha in such a case?  We will begin with the relevant Talmudic passage and go onto Rishonim, the Shulchan Aruch, Acharonim, and more contemporary Poskim. The Gemorah in Bava Basra (21b) cites a Braisah which rules that one may not spread his fishing nets in order to catch a fish which was near the nets of another fisherman. That braisah states that one must distance fish traps from fish, i.e., from other fish traps, as far as the fish travel. The Gemarah asks: And how much is this distance? Rabba bar Rav Huna says: Up to a parasang [parsa].

Tight-Knit Venezuelan Kehilla Still Reeling From Surfside Deaths

The Jewish community in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, lost five of its members in Surfside and the unusually tight-knit community is still reeling, JTA reported. Seniors Christina Beatriz Elvira, z’l, and Leon Oliwkowicz, z’l, were among the first victims whose remains were recovered and identified, and the bodies of three Jewish Venezuelan young men were found later: Luis Sadovnic, Moises “El Chino” Rodán and Andres Levine. The three young men, all in their 20s, were raised in the small and tightly intertwined community in Caracas – a city where the Jews feel that the community is one extended family. “The entire community feels this tragedy in the most innermost core of our beings,” Miguel Truzman, vice president of the Confederation of Jewish Associations of Venezuela, told JTA. “They were boys that we watched grow up; the whole community is deeply traumatized and devastated by this tragedy.” All three boys attended the private Jewish high school in Caracas, the Colegio Moral y Luces Herzl-Bialik Jewish school. The school accepts students from all levels of Jewish backgrounds and of course, ethnic backgrounds, as the community’s small size precludes more than one Jewish school. The school was founded in 1946 by Ashkenazi emigres but Ashkenazim and Sephardim mingle together in the classrooms. “The Venezuelan Ashkenazim allowed the Sephardim to study in the school without the slightest problem. If you go to another Latin American country, like Mexico — or even around the world — every community, depending on their origin, has their own school,” Sami Rozenbaum, journalist and current editor-in-chief of Nuevo Mundo Israelita, or New Israelite World, the community’s weekly newspaper, told JTA. “Our community stands as a reference point in the world because of its integration. We are fully united. Here there’s no distinction between who’s from Ashkenazi or Sephardi ancestry. The only separate components are the synagogues and the religious and cultural traditions of each group.” In the early 1990s, the Jewish community in Venezuela numbered 25,000 members but that number has dwindled to less than 6,000 due to the dismal political and socioeconomic situation in the Latin American country. As Venezuelan Jewish immigrants settled in the US, Israel, Mexico and Panama, almost all the Jews who remain in Venezuela are Orthodox, live in Caracas and have developed a unique closeness. Venezuela is almost free of anti-Semitism despite the fact that both former Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez and current President Nicolás Maduro espouse anti-Semitic messages, including trivialization of the Holocaust. “Criticism of Israel in Maduro-controlled or -affiliated media continued to carry anti-Semitic overtones, sometimes disguised as anti-Zionist messages,” the US State Department’s 2020 Report on International Religious Freedom on Venezuela states. However, the Venezuelan population seems to largely ignore these messages. “Venezuelans are not antisemitic. For example, if they see someone wearing a kippah on their head and do not know what it is, they’ll ask you. The unfamiliar does not cause them estrangement but respect,” said Isaac Cohen, chief rabbi of the Israelite Association of Venezuela (AIV), an umbrella organization representing Jews of Sephardic origin. “The reason I have been here for 43 years is that I do not feel, nor have I experienced antisemitism. Although, of course, in Europe, there is cultural antisemitism, but here there is no such thing as an antisemitic culture.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

Cholent Question Stumps Jeopardy Contestants

The contestants on a Jeopardy episode that aired this week were stumped by a photo of cholent, JTA reported. The photo was a clue in the “Sabbath” category for $400: “Exodus 35:3 bans doing this on the Sabbath, hence the Jewish dish ‘cholent,’ which can go on the stove Friday and cook until Saturday lunch.” Contestants offered guesses of “What’s cooking?” and “What’s work?” but failed to come up with the specific prohibition the photo was illustrating. In the end, Mayim Bialik, an Orthodox Jew who is serving as the show’s temporary host, explained the answer: “What is ‘lighting a fire?’ And the word ‘cholent’ is from the French ‘chaud lent,’ [meaning] ‘cooks a long time.’” The contestants obviously did not brush up on the Lamed Tes Melachos in preparation for the show.
