“Cheesy” Boycott Of Trader Joe’s Backfires As Israeli Feta Cheese Is Snatched Off The Shelves

Hatem Bazian, a lecturer at UC Berkley who has expressed support for Hamas, compared Israel to Nazi Germany and claimed that Jewish history in Israel is a “mythical past,” tried to boycott Trader Joe’s last week but it didn’t work out exactly as he had hoped, Ynet reported on Monday. “Trader Joe’s is having Israeli Feta on its shelves!” Bazian wrote on Facebook. “One more reason to stop shopping at the store.” Joe Zevuloni, an Israeli-American businessman and anti-BDS activist who lives in Miami, spotted the post and wrote to his 35,180 followers on his Facebook page, which he calls “Tzava Ha’hasbara L’Yisrael (Propaganda Army for Israel): “I need you to support me! This anti-Semitic Israel hating professor from UC Berkeley tagged Linda Sarsour in his post calling to boycott Trader Joe’s supermarket chain due to the Israeli feta cheese sold there.” “Go to his page and don’t forget to tell him that in his merit we’re all davka going to buy from the chain he publicized which sells Israeli products,” Zevuloni urged his followers. American Jews and Israelis in the US responded to his call, posting pictures and videos of themselves shopping at Trader Joe’s and buying packages of the cheese. Within hours, the shelves of several branches of Trader Joe’s were emptied of Israeli feta cheese. But that fact didn’t deter anyone and supporters of Israel bought other “made in Israel products” instead, including Bamba, techina and croutons. Bazian was “delighted” to receive hundreds of pro-Israel comments on his post and dozens of Israeli flag emojis. https://www.facebook.com/HatemBazian/posts/10159239707488378?__xts__%5B0%5D=68.ARBqaeuwEhooLjb_4P_DrTYLHLp9buUsNO00t5ynChEW13QR0ffSKBqLFp6iWs2K4DtLNJp4Suln1nBMtgfgw10FF8sdjVdsON6IzsTSn0iPeDBuCB-qnuOE_d4gRjMdvIFXiqLS7BD5vY9mB4Km_-Q2lHnMpWz9HePT_vegOK-maqMQyYjaRKDjvthzCTlNV_e9En6QJHNJpwRJtBiNN5hZQ9jS9Mzj2m9wSKyrZVMEPQzHpedUxB8TKHm5jspegkuqqiWnzRYHcm1_czf6aWMhA4MJ0oYKEdgtpjhLjMG27_PfBOCkkTkJ-sQmwQrTY2Zz-Hjhnbiq4DTULgrZ&__tn__=-R

Israeli Flag Prompts Boycott of Certain Food Items

The Eida Chareidis has announced a boycott of certain items that are displaying an Israeli flag on their package as large firms display the national symbol ahead of Israel’s 60th anniversary. One such popular item is the Bomba snack food; in addition many other items which bear an Eida Chareidis kosher supervision. The pashkavilim (wall notices) circulated before Shabbos call on chareidi consumers to boycott the items, angrily adding that companies cannot enjoy a chareidi hechsher and then push their [unwanted] Zionist agenda in the faces of consumers opposing the “Zionist avoda zara” (Zionist idol worship). Some notices call on chareidi families who hold the religious way of life dear to them and their children to refrain from bringing products displaying the Israeli flag into their homes. Adding to pre-Yom HaAtzma’ut (Independence Day) tensions are notices that rabbis are planning to boycott official holiday events due to fears there will be situations that do not conform with basic demands of modesty. The rabbis signaling they will not attend official holiday events include the rabbis of the communities of Elad and Rosh HaAyin. YWN reported last month [HERE] that Rabbi Chananya Tsfar, the head of the Rosh HaAyin Religious Council tried to persuade the Yad L’Banim organization to abandon non-Jewish customs associated with Memorial Day, such as the laying of wreaths on graves. The rabbi explained that he will encourage the recitation of tehillim while Memorial Day sirens are sounded, as well as lighting yartzheit candles and the recitation of Kadish instead of promoting foreign customs. Rabbi Tsfar’s letter received a harsh response from Yad L’Banim officials who rejected his attempt to implement changes in the long-standing customs. (Yechiel Spira – YWN Israel)

WATCH: Eida Chareidis Covers Over Hechsher On Psagot Wine Labeled “Israel’s 70th Anniversary”

The Psagot Winery, which marketed a special bottle on the occasion of Israel’s 70th anniversary, was forced to hide the Kashrus symbol of the Badatz Eida Chareidis as reported by KAN News, but not necessarily because of the anti-Zionist ideology attributed to it. It is pointed out, the wine is still certified Kosher under the Eida Chareidis. Journalist Uriah Elkayam exposed the behavior of the Badatz, which took place at the Psagot Winery in the Binyamin Regional Council, Shomron. A senior member of the Eida explained this was for reasons that are connected to outside parties, and not within the organization. However, the KAN News report states the Eida kashrus symbol was indeed removed because of the 70th anniversary label. In a conversation with Kikar Shabbos News, the senior official from the Badatz said: “It’s not because there’s the symbol of the 70th anniversary on the bottles. It does not bother us. The point is, we do not have the time and the energy to fight over this with the faction that is more extreme than us.” The official noted the Eida handled this exact issue the same way during Israel’s 60th anniversary. “During the 60th anniversary of the Zionists, even more extreme activists from among us began a struggle to boycott the Osem Bamba company because of the it contained the symbol of the festivities”, he said. It should be recalled that the inscription ‘Special Edition on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel’, which appeared about a decade ago on a nougat-flavored Bamba stirred the wrath of the extremist circles, leading to pashkavilim calling for a boycott of the snack. Then, in 2009, senior members of the Eida’s Vaad Kashrus were forced to defend themselves and prepare to absorb the economic damage to the large conglomerate under their supervision, said the Eida official.
