MIRACLE: Day Before His Arrival, Car Slams Into Satmar Rebbe’s Spot at Chabad of Palm Springs

A driver under the influence of drugs slammed his vehicle into the Chabad of Palm Springs shul, with the vehicle crashing into the bais medrash at the exact spot where the Satmar Rebbe, Rav Aharon Teitelbaum shlit”a, stands by davening during his annual vacation to the town – which is scheduled to begin today. The accident occurred on Shabbos morning just after davening was over, as Palm Springs’ Chabad shliach and another individual were still in the bais medrash. The errant vehicle caused massive damage to the shul located on East Palm Canyon Drive. Bichasdei Hashem, no one was injured inside or outside the Shul. The driver was not seriously injured, but mispalelim were unable to daven in the shul for the remainder of the day, and shalosh seudos had to take place outside. Rav Aharon shlit”a davens in the Chabad of Palm Springs on weekdays when in the town and has his own minyan on Shabbos. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Who is Responsible for More Torah Learning than Torah uMesorah, Agudah, the OU, Chabad and Both Satmar Combined?

by Shmuli Mogelowitz Yes, it is true.  In the past six weeks, this one individual is responsible for more Torah being learned in this state than all of the aforementioned organizations combined.  This one man is, yes, George Floyd. On account of Mr. Floyd, people got up the nerve to restart the gzairos against chinuch when it was safe to do so.  Before this, people did not wish to take on the mayor.  Only when they saw the double standard – numerous mosdos of chinuch realized the tremendous disparity in how Klal Yisroel is being treated and how the protestors are being treated. A ZCHUS Is it a zchus?  We know that Balak offered korbanos to give a klallah to klal Yisroel.  Yet, in that zchus, he was zocheh to have rus and Dovid HaMelech emanate from him.  There is no question, it seems, that Mr. Floyd gets a zchus here. And yes, it is true that he robbed a pregnant woman at gunpoint.  It is true that he may have passed on a forged twenty dollar bill and that he may have had a drug problem.  But yesh, koneh olamo b’shaa achas – there is something that he had done that earned him having the zchus of having so many tinokos shel bais raban studying Torah for so long. The mussar haskel to us is that we may be reshayim, we may have done terrible avlahs.  But we can also have one zchus, one merit, that can be responsible for remarkable turnarounds and we can get incredible zchusim for doing that.  We should use this thought as an inspiration.

Chabad Shliach Donates Kidney To Satmar Chosid

[The following is an article by Chabad.org] Teaneck, NJ – When the opportunity arose for Chabad-Lubavitch Rabbi Ephraim Simon to potentially risk his life in the preservation of another’s, he paused. He wanted to give one of his kidneys to a suffering man; the problem was that he had to think about how he would communicate that decision to his nine children. So in July, Simon, co-director of Friends of Lubavitch of Bergen County in Teaneck, N.J., gathered his family around him. “As emissaries of the Lubavitcher Rebbe,” he told them, referring to Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory, “we dedicate our lives to helping other people.” He went on to describe the terminally-ill man he had met earlier, a father of a large family just like theirs. “By tatte giving him a new kidney, he will live, G-d willing. This is our gift to him and you are all a part of it.” Waiting for News Simon’s journey from community leader to organ donor – the operation took place exactly one week ago – began last year when the 41-year-old rabbi opened a mass e-mail from a woman trying to arrange a kidney donation for a potential recipient. A 12-year-old Jewish girl with the same blood type as Simon’s was succumbing to a terrible disease, and desperately needed a new kidney. The rabbi decided to respond. “I have a 12-year-old daughter, too,” explains Simon from his home, where he’s in the midst of a two-week recovery period. Having never considered donating an organ in the past, “I was moved to consider testing for her.” “Let’s see what it entails, and then make a decision,” came the reply from his wife, Nechamy Simon, when he brought it up. After a few days of intense research, and a careful risk-benefit analysis together, the Simons reached out to the sender of the e-mail, a Jewish woman by the name of Chaya Lipschutz, offering one of the rabbi’s kidneys if he matched as a candidate. “I cannot let a young girl die, and not do anything,” Simon told Lipschutz. But the woman informed him that “a donor has already been found.” Many people would have understandably felt relief at the realization that they wouldn’t be called upon to undergo major surgery. Simon, however, saw things differently. “I felt like I didn’t act fast enough,” he recalls. “I knew right then and there that if somebody else was in need, I was going to be the one to save their life.” According to the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, more than 80,000 people nationwide are waiting for a healthy kidney. But last year, more than 4,500 lost their fight for life while waiting. Simon told Lipschutz, a former kidney donor herself, to keep his name on file and to contact him if another person was in need. Two months later, the woman called back with news that a 35-year-old mother of two needed a kidney. Simon immediately agreed to undergo tests at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, N.Y., where the woman was being treated. He wasn’t a match. Then in February, Lipschutz called yet again to ask Simon if he would give his kidney to a single Israeli man in his 30s. “It wasn’t for a young girl, or for

PHOTOS: Plane Carrying Satmar Rebbe Diverted To Dulles Airport Due To Storm; Local Askonim Arrange Minyan & Food

As is the custom of a snowy Baltimore morning, there was a plethora of closings that spanned the educational and business sectors. However, the business of chesed was fully operational, at all hours. One local businessman was about to go in to high gear for a very unusual occurrence, especially around these parts. At approximately 7:30 AM, after long hours of chesed calls, an anonymous Baltimore businessman heard the voice mail alert tone on his cell while in line at the market. When he noticed the missed calls from the 718 and 845 area codes, numbers that appeared to be very familiar due to the scope of his business network, he immediately returned the calls. One call leads to the unraveling of a very troubling situation; The Satmar Rebbe, Rav Aron Teitelbaum Shlita, en route from Mexico to JFK, has been diverted to Dulles. This contact called Moshe* because he is the only one of his contacts that reside proximate to Dulles. At least his nerves have calmed knowing that he was about to, once again, be facilitating a chesed. Moshe went to his Rebbe, Harav Yissochor Dov Eichenstein, who then assembled a group of baalei batim from Baltimore’s new mikdash m’at, Merkaz Torah U’Tefilah, who traveled down to Dulles airport. The Satmar Rebbe, who is in availus, needed a minyan and a proper meal. In no time at all, Rebbetzin Eichenstein prepared a feast fit for a Rebbe. With a Sefer Torah, Chalav Yisrael milk and enough chevra for a minyan, the travel to Dulles began. The Satmar Rebbe’s plane landed at 8:34 AM, but the Rebbe and his entourage were prevented from disembarking because it was a continuing flight that can only open at the final destination, as per US law. Furthermore, the three hour tarmac rule did not apply because it was non US airline. Fortuitously, Rav Eichenstein and his mispalillim had kefitzas haderech and arrived at 10:15. Simultaneously, Reb Levi Shem Tov, Chabad’s representative in Washington, was working with TSA, the Mexican Ambassador to the USA and others to have the airline open the doors for the Rebbe to disembark. These efforts did not suffice to open the doors of the plane and the Merkaz Torah U’Tefilah group sat tight in the international arriving parking areas. Finally at 11:40 the flight was declared discontinued and all travelers could then alight. The Satmar Rebbe and his group were ushered through customs as VIPs and headed to the suite reserved at the Marriot Dulles where davening and breakfast would take place. The Rebbe showed tremendous hakaras hatov to Rav Eichenstein and all those involved in performing this valuable chesed. The Rebbe was quite impressed at the mesiras nefesh given for his personal situation and gave a bracha to the entire group. While in the Washington areas the Rebbe visited various Mosdos HaTorah. All who were fortunate to be mishtataif in today’s unbelievable chesed gained tremendous chizuk. Click HERE for photos. (Source: Baltimore Jewish Life)

Ou Kosher Outreach to Satmar in Kiryas Joel

Under the direction of Rabbi Yosef Grossman, OU Director of Kashrut Education, and with Rabbi Moshe Perlmutter of Passaic, NJ providing the training, OU Kosher went to the Satmar Talmud Torah’s kitchen – capable of serving 10,000 meals daily – to illustrate foodservice kashering, performed in large kitchens such as those found in schools, hotels and catering establishments. The next day Rabbi Perlmutter demonstrated industrial kashering, performed in plants and factories, at Oasis Food Company in Hillside, N.J., manufacturers of margarine and other condiments. Some 20 members of the kollel, what Rabbi Grossman called “a very learned group,” participated. According to Rabbi Grossman, the group could have been as large as 100, based on interest in the community, if there had been space to accommodate them. Outreach to Satmar follows similar approaches to Chabad Lubavitch, Belz, Bobov, Vichnitz and Skver Chasidim, among other groups. “It was only a matter of time before we got to Satmar,” Rabbi Grossman said. “We were approached to demonstrate kashering. Rabbi Perlmutter has great expertise in this area.” In its study of Jewish law, the Satmar kollel seeks out practical applications of everything kollel members study, thus leading to the request to the OU. “It is clear,” declared Rabbi Menachem Genack, CEO of OU Kosher, “that in the Torah world, we have much more in common than what sets us apart. The range of communities that have availed themselves of ASK OUTREACH is living proof that the OU’s expertise spans the Jewish world, and that respect for our knowledge and its practical applications is a unifying force in the observant community.” Back in Kiryas Joel, the session in the Satmar kitchen, focusing on ovens, pots, kettles and other items, emphasized how to make a treif vessel kosher; as Rabbi Grossman pointed out, everything in the Satmar kitchen was kosher, but the techniques could still be demonstrated. “We received a very warm reception at Kiryas Joel and were made to feel right at home,” Rabbi Grossman said. He was pleased to see the OU symbol on food items in the Satmar kitchen. “We were very pleased to reach out to Satmar in our ongoing efforts to develop relationships with all segments of the Torah world who would like to benefit from our services,” Rabbi Grossman said. “We hope this approach to the Satmar community will be ongoing in future areas of mutual benefit.” Rabbi Perlmutter agreed. He noted that in kosherizing seminars he gives for the OU, this was “the only time it was totally Satmar and on their home turf, in their kitchen, with their own mashgiach participating.” Summing up their knowledge of kosher law as “phenomenal,” he said, “We both learned a lot from each other.” (YWN Desk – NYC)

Lubavitch Shlichim Meet With Satmar Rebbe From Kiryas Yoel

Shmais Exclusive:  Earlier this week chabad Shliachim to Princeton, NJ, Rabbi Dovid Dubov, Rabbi Chaim Schapiro of Morristown, NJ and Rabbi Dubov’s two sons Sholom Ber – age 11 and Motty – age 9 met with the Satmar Rebbe, Rabbi Aron Teitelbaum in his Kiryas Yoel home. The purpose of the 40-minute long was to present Rabbi Teitelbaum with the entire 25-volume of Yalkut Moshiach Ugeula Al Hatorah. Rabbi Dubov shared with the Satmar Rebbe the scope of the project how the Lubavitcher Rebbe Zt’l wanted everyone should learn about Moshiach Ugeula and the idea of collecting Mefarshim form hundreds of different commentary on the Torah in the subject of Moshiach Ugeula. The Satmar Rebbe was very touched that commentary from his ancestors in the Satmar dynasty such as; Yismach Moshe, Atzei Chaim, Kedushas Yom Tov, and Yeetav Lev etc are included in the Yalkut Moshiach Ugeula Seforim. In general he was looking at the Seforim for over 10 minutes and expressed great admiration for the scope of the project and wished great Hatzlacha for the completion until the end of the Torah. Rabbi Teitelbaum spoke very highly of the Shliach, Rabbi Yonosan Denebeim director of Chabad of Palm Springs, California where he goes on vacation and Davens at the Chabad Shul and uses the Mikvah. He related a story where many years ago there were certain organizations who wanted to stop Lubavitch Yeshivos form getting support from certain programs and he personally called and spoke to the ones in charge that they should not stop, C”V to support Lubavitch and B”H they have not. A few years later, Rabbi Teitelbaum continued, the same people wanted to stop Satmer Yeshivos from getting support and at that time LUBAVITCH intervened and helped Satmar. He spoke with great Kovod how Satmar helped Lubavitch and Lubavitch helped Satmar. Rabbi Teitelbaum spoke to Rabbi Dubov in great length about his shlichus work in Princeton and the approach of Lubavitch. He asked how many families come to shul on Shabbos, and Rabbi Dubov answered approximately 40 families. He asked if they are all shomer shabbos and Rabbi Dubov answered “many are and many are on the way of becoming shomer shabbos.” He smiled and liked the answer. He spoke to Rabbi Chaim Schapiro regarding Morristown and Rabbi Zalman Leib Markowitz the principal of the boys Cheder. He then spoke to the Shluchim kids about their learning and their shlichus. During the course of the visits there were Divrei Torah and Chassidishe stories about the Rebbe that Rabbi Dubov and Rabbi Schapiro shared with the Satmar Rebbe. On the way out his Gabboim thanked the Shluchim for coming and said that their Rebbe enjoyed the visit very much. (Shmais.com exclusive story / Photo: EG Studios)

Thousands visit the Lubavitchers Rebbe’s Ohel On Lag Baomer [VIDEOS & PHOTOS]

As one of the most joyous days on the Jewish calendar, Lag B’omer is a time when many Yidden seek brachos and yeshuos. The legendary pilgrimage to Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai’s resting place in Meron is also seen by many as an opportunity to daven for everything they need, materially and spiritually. Across the globe as well, Yidden take the opportunity on the auspicious day of Lag B’omer to visit kivrei tzaddikim and invoke the zechus of their holy souls on high to beseech on their behalf. The Lubavitcher Rebbe zt”l explains how according to Kabbalah (and even with some implications in Halacha), the gravesites of all tzaddikim around the world are interconnected. Therefore, when someone visits the resting place of a tzaddik, even here in America, they are in a sense also visiting Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai at the same time! In a 1951 letter to Reb Elyakim Getzel Berger, a prominent leader of the Satmar community in London, the Lubavitcher Rebbe explained the power of visiting the Ohel of his father-in-law, the Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, on Lag B’omer: “I received regards from you and your family, as well as the ‘pan’ [=kvittel], which I read at the tziyun of my saintly father-in-law of blessed memory on Lag B’omer… Reading a ‘pan’ at the Ohel on Rashbi’s day of celebration… has the ability to break all barriers and to bestow upon each individual everything they need – children, health and livelihood, in abundance. I hope you will be able to share good news with me regarding the matters mentioned in your ‘pan’.” In this spirit, the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s Ohel in Queens is always filled throughout the day of Lag B’omer with thousands of Yidden seeking brachos and yeshuos. This year, to allow for as many people as possible to seize this opportunity and daven at the Rebbe’s holy resting place, a team of dedicated volunteers arranged twelve specially chartered coach buses shuttling the eager crowds back and forth from Crown Heights—from early morning. Generous sponsors ensured a great and comfortable ride, with many amenities. Sponsored by Bais Shmuel-Chabad, Yerachmiel and Rivka Leah Jacobson in honor of their daughter Mushky’s wedding to Nochum Mayer Rabin today. Organized by Menachem Benchemon. Rabbi Abba Refson, the director of Ohel Chabad Lubavitch Center at the Rebbe’s Ohel says that the crowds of thousands of visitors exceeded anything seen in past years, to the point that extra security was called at the last moment (usually reserved for very high traffic days at the Ohel, such as the Rabbeim’s yahrtzeits on Yud Shvat and Gimmel Tammuz). The Lubavitcher Rebbe’s Ohel in Queens is open to the public 24 hours a day at: OHEL CHABAD LUBAVITCH 226-20 Francis Lewis Blvd Cambria Heights, NY 11411 | To send a kvittel to be read at the Ohel, call: 718-723-4545 or visit: OhelChabad.org   (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Mysterious Virus Infecting Thousands Of Yeshivah Bochurim

Thousands of yeshivah bochurim throughout Israel have fallen ill in recent weeks with a mysterious virus with symptoms of high fever, stomach pain, cold symptoms and especially severe weakness. The virus, which began before Chanukah in some yeshivos and others more recently, has hit yeshivos in Jerusalem, Bnei Brak, and Elad as well as in Kfar Chabad and other yishuvim. The virus has hit all types of yeshivos – Litvak, Sefardi, and Chassidish as well as Dati Leumi yeshivos on yishuvim and in towns and cities. As could be expected, most of the ill bochurim got tested for COVID when they became ill but they tested negative. The yeshivah that seems to have been hit the worse is Yeshivas Torah B’Tifarta in Elad, where over 240 bochurim have fallen ill, with many suffering from high fever. About 150 bochurim in Yeshivas Be’er HaTalmud caught the virus and another 150 in Yeshivas Orchos HaTorah. Dati Leumi Yeshivos throughout Israel have been affected including yeshivos in Nahariya, Mitzpeh Ramon, Yerucham, Nir, Mitzpeh, and others. First Bris Milah in 35 Years Held in Cluj-Napoca, Klausenberg Romania

For the first time in 35 years, a Bris Milah was held in the city of Cluj-Napoca, otherwise known as Klausenberg Romania. The Bris was held in the Chabad House that is run by Rabbi Bov Bear Urgand. The Mohel was flown in specially from France for the occasion, as currently, those flying from France to Romania, do not require a period of isolation upon landing. This allowed the Bris to be performed on time. The Bris was performed on a member of a family that lives in a small town next to Cluj-Napoca, which is in close contact with the Chabad Shluchim in the city. The event was held on Tuesday in compliance with Covid-19 restrictions, in the presence of the family and community members. Fabbi Urgand told Bchadrei Charedim news website a bit about the background of the region: The city of Cluj holds a central place in Romania. The cities that are near us include, Satmar (Satmarel/Satu Mare),  Kretshnif (Crăciunești), Sigaat (Sighetu Marmației), and Deyzh (Dej), all of which were major Chassidic centers. This whole area was a region that flourished with Hungarian Jews in years gone by. Lots of Chassidim come here to visit the graves of their forefathers. We here in the Chabad house, supply kosher food and Shabbos meals to those who come to daven, as well as Jewish tourists. We organize Minyanim and help the Jewish community in the city, which numbers close to 200 people and 100 students. Yesterday, we were zocheh to have a historic bris in the city.” (YWN Israel Desk – Jerusalem)

SHOCK: New NYS Guidelines Require Yeshiva Elementary Schools to Teach AT LEAST 6 HOURS A DAY of Secular Studies

Albany – Today, the NYS Education Department released guidelines about the substantial equivalency of instructions that nonpublic schools are required to provide. The guidelines acknowledge that religious schools are different than public schools, but require all religious schools to teach the same courses as the local public schools, and do devote the same amount of time to those subjects. The new instructions, accompanied by tool kits and checklists, leaves very little flexibility for what yeshiva elementary schools can teach. For grades 1-4, it mandates instructions in 7 subjects at an attainment level similar to state standards for public schools. For grades 5-8, it requires 11 subjects, with strict time requirements for most of these subjects. Adding up all of the subjects and time requirements, a yeshiva will have to devote more than six hours every day, five days a week to secular studies. It further requires school districts to review all religious schools over the next two and a half years, and then to reinspect all of the schools over the subsequent five years. The new guidelines state that if a school is found to be non-equivalent, parents will be given 30-45 days to transfer their children to a different school. After 30-45 days, the school will be defunded and the parents will be in violation of the truancy laws. The State Education Department seems to have realized that it makes no sense to require Yeshivas to devote so many hours to secular studies, and so it included a footnote that says that for religious schools, some of their requirements “may be met by the incorporation of the State learning standards of such subjects into the syllabi for other courses. Such integration must be documented in writing and kept on file at the school.” Does that mean that yeshivas will now depend on the whims of bureaucrats in school districts all across New York State to understand the benefits and skills derived from limudei kodesh? A few years ago, a different New York City leader attempted to force us to tamper with our mesorah by attempting to regulate bris milah. The frum community got together, and the Agudah, Satmar, Chabad and numerous mohelim sued to block the government intrusion into our core religious practices. In its decision in favor of the lawsuit, the court observed that the City appeared to be biased against religious practice, because it regulated bris milah but ignored other instances where there were supposedly public health concerns. That lead the court to conclude that what bothered the City was frum practice, not public health. With the City and State attempting to intrude on our yeshiva system, perhaps it is time to point out that the educational system we are supposed to be substantially equivalent to – the public school system – is a failure and has been a failure for decades. That raises the same question the court asked the City about bris milah – are you really concerned about education, or are you just bothered by religious education. All those who care about our yeshivas should demand an answer to that question. (YWN World Headquarters – NYC)

Mercaz Belz is Launching a Website

Marcaz Belz is launching a website called World of Belz. Websites, and even Jewish websites, have been around for quite a while and frankly, opening a website now is something that’s quite outdated. But there is something very new here. Yes, there is a lot of Chassidus content online, but they are mainly from Chabad and Breslov, not from the Galician-Hungarian stream of Chassidus. The goal of the site is to be Mekarev Yidden to Yiddishkeit and to bring people to appreciate and support Belz Institutions.”, says Rabbi Pinchas Lerner, president of Mercaz Belz, the organization that initiated the website. “There is a large demographic out there who have a connection with Belz going back a few generations and it’s still important to them. By sharing Torah and giving them an opportunity to support Torah, we connect them to their roots.” The uniqueness of this site is in its premise of how important it is to teach Chassidus in order to be mekarev Yidden. Many years ago, the Belzer Rebbe founded the Yeshiva Torah Ve’emunah in Eretz Yisroel. Torah Ve’emunah is a Ba’al Teshuva Yeshiva that teaches Torah and Mitzvos with the Chasidish ‘flam’ and approach. Belz is part of the Galician-Hungarian streams of Chassidus, which are very different from the Russian streams (Chabad, Breslov, and others) and the Polish streams (Ger, etc.). The Galician-Hungarian streams comprise of Belz, Satmar, Bobov, etc. Even Skver and Viznitz were heavily influenced by the Galician-Hungarian streams. The Galician-Hungarian teachings are focused on Avodah and Tikkun Hamidos, different than Chabad that focuses on teaching fundamentals in Kabbalah. The Galician-Hungarian streams believe Kabbalah should be studied only by people who have reached a level of purity and humility. Chassidus in the Galician-Hungarian is much more focused on Chizuk, Avodas Hashem, Tikkun Hamidos, and becoming closer to Hashem. Those subjects are very appropriate even for beginners. To be Mekarev intellectual Jews, who are knowledgeable in worldly subjects, it is not enough to teach Aleph Beis. The Torah has to talk to their nefesh and their intellect. World of Belz will bring forth the light of Chassidus, its teachings, customs, and insights in a way that will be relevant and understood by beginners too. Belz today is balancing between preserving the spirit of the previous generations and living in the current world. On the one hand, Belz teaches purity and simplicity in Avodas Hashem, and on the other hand it engages in the world in being Mekarev and doing Chesed with every Jew. Balancing both worlds with the goal of making an impact has been part of Belz from the beginning. When the 1st Belzer Rebbe, the Sar Shalom, became Rav in Belz, the townspeople wanted to keep davening in Nusach Ashkenaz. At first there were two Minyanim, the main one davened Nusach Ashkenaz, and a small one davened Nusach Ari. As the Rav of the town, the Sar Shalom used to start his davening in the main minyan but continued in the Chassidish Minyan which finished later. Once on Simchas Torah, the Sar Shalom conducted Hakafos together with the Chassidish Minyan, with great Hislahavus and Bren. When the Baalei Batim of the main minyan heard, they rushed over to watch. After a while they too got caught up in the enthusiasm and started dancing along. The

Op-Ed By YWN: Drug (Opioid) Crisis Spiraling Out Of Control In Frum Communities – What Are We Doing About It?

President Trump took a bold move on Thursday by declaring the opioid crisis a nationwide public health emergency, and announcing new steps to combat what he described as the worst drug crisis in U.S. history. “We can be the generation that ends the opioid epidemic”, Trump said. While President Trump should be commended for his actions today, it’s sad that many people in our communities have yet to awaken and grasp the magnitude of how this crisis is affecting our community. The fact is, speak to any therapist, and you will very quickly learn that the drug crisis in the Frum is exploding. Many people think their families will never be affected, and many others feel that this topic should remain quiet and be dealt with privately. Unfortunately, the “remaining quiet” and “dealing with it quietly” tactics were tried already the way molestation was dealt with in the past 50 years. We all know where that ended up…. Thankfully, molestation is a topic that has been brought to the forefront and children are being educated to be aware of predators. People have been reporting pedophiles to the police, and abusers have been locked away. Large forums have been held in the most insular communities such as Lakewood, where parents have been given an education about pedophilia. But now it’s time for us to grab the bull by the horns regarding the drug crisis. There is no reason why more lives need to be lost. At a recent Kiddush in a very prominent Shul led by a very prominent Rov, there was a table where the men were eating “edibles”. This is not a fantasy or made up story. This happened in the past few weeks. Do you even know what “edibles” are? Do you know that boys can be smoking an E-Cig with “wax” (synthetic marijuana), and there will be virtually no smell? So basically, your child can be smoking what you think is an E-Cig – but meanwhile be taking drugs in your own home? Hopefully the following points will be read by all of you, and taken to heart. * Close to 90 Frum people have died from overdoses since January 2017. This is an indisputable but horrific fact. (One Rov who seems to be in denial about this crisis asked me recently “have you seen the death certificates?” after I informed him of the spiraling number of opioid deaths.) * Many of the overdoses are not teens as most people think they are. The victims are grown men and women – many with wonderful jobs and families. That is a misconception that people make. The drug problem is not “teens” or “kids at risk”. The drug crisis is affecting people of all ages, and it doesn’t discriminate. From Chabad to Satmar, from Lakewood to Los Angeles, from Chicago to Deal. It is a real serious problem, and it’s getting worse. * Hatzolah and other EMS agencies around the United States have used Narcan hundreds upon hundreds of times since last January in Frum communities – and as many as TEN TIMES THIS WEEK ALONE, saving the lives of hundreds of potential drug overdose deaths. * There are thousands of Frum people in “recovery”; who are constantly going to meetings and working hard on themselves to stay sober. If You Are Looking For A Calabria Esrog, Prepare To Pay Top Dollar

As YWN has previously reported, if you are one of the people who wish to buy a Calabria esrog, you are likely to learn they are not readily available and if they are, they are quite costly. These esrogim, which are grown in Italy, have suffered from harsh weather conditions this year and the price has jumped four times the price last year. One of the merchants in Jerusalem updated his regular customers, informing them this year, the cost will be 1,200 shekels for an entry price esrog. The Calabrian breeds are grown in the Calabria region in south-eastern Italy, and the tradition is that Bnei Yisrael used these esrogim, which were grown there in the orchards freely, without the cultivation and care of human hands, which led to the conclusion that this was not a crossbreed. Chabadniks customarily purchase a Calabria esrog, which on a regular year can cost $100 and upward. This year however, the reality is a different one, and the cost is now $350-$400 for a bottom line esrog and its size and beauty are not comparable to past years. It appears a cold front that hit Italy a few months ago and if this was not enough, it was followed later on with extreme heat and the esrog crop has been sorely compromised. One veteran Jerusalem merchant explains to his clients that this year, prices are quite high and the quality of the esrogim is far less than they have settled for in past years. In addition, he urges people to come early as there is a significant shortage this year. Many Satmar Chassidim also purchase Calabria esrogim and efforts to place a ceiling on the price have failed. Rabbonim and askanim visited Italy in the hope of halting the sharp price increase, but this too failed since there are few esrogim which are kosher, not to mention even a fewer number that one might consider mehadrin. For an in depth article about Yaanuva Esrogin, click here. (YWN – Israel Desk, Jerusalem)

Hoodlums Attack Rabbi Moshe Havlin And His Rebitzen In Their Home

Profound chilul Hashem might best describe the actions of about 20 hoodlums who forced their way into the Kiryat Gat home of HaGaon HaRav Moshe Havlin Shlita and began trashing the home and shouting against the rav and his rebitzen. Rabbi Havlin, 68, has been serving as Chief Rabbi of Kiryat Gat for decades as well as Rosh Yeshivas Chabad in the city. On Wednesday evening 4 Elul, the group of 20-25 males entered the rav’s home and began acting disorderly, throwing pashkavilim and accusing him of making money on each Chabadnik that enter the IDF. The group was protesting the recent agreement signed between Chabad rabbonim and the IDF pertaining to military service. In a report on Kol Chai Radio, the hoodlums were described as “dressed as Satmar and Eida members”, while Rabbi Havlin added in an interview with Kol Chai “some were dressed litvish, wearing short suit jacket. Rabbi Havlin adds police were exemplary, remaining with him and his wife the entire night and adding and “taking the attack most seriously”. The rav stated if there is machlokes, there are ways to address the disagreement and this is never accomplished via the internet or by using violence, but in an appropriate closed private forum. He lamented the magnitude of the chilul Hashem as the tranquility of his community was disturbed and a police response was demanded. At least three intruders were taken into custody. Rabbi Havlin praised police, adding they remained with him and the rebitzen throughout the night. When asked how the rebitzen was dealing with the attack, Rabbi Havlin explains she is slowly getting back to herself but it was a difficult. The rabbi added there are hoodlums in every camp and such people are simply looking for action and confrontation and will join any fight no matter how unrelated it is to them. Rabbi Havlin explained he lives in a primarily non-religious community and neighbors were shocked and horrified when they saw how the religious-appearing thugs were acting. VIDEO AND PHOTOS: Mishpacha Magazine Holds Upscale ‘Summit’ For Leading Community Activists

[VIDEO & PHOTOS BY SHIMON GIFTER IN EXTENDED ARTICLE] It was definitely something new for charedi media, an innovative and fresh approach to dialogue and connection. Billed as a celebration of those who make the stories, by those who tell the stories, the senior staff and editors of the international Mishpacha Magazine hosted an upscale event for leading askanim and activists. The exclusive guest list, which included some of the most engaged and passionate communal doers, enjoyed the relaxed setting, informal atmosphere and candid dialogue. Held at Bridge26 in the Dumbo neighbourhood, the event opened with cocktails before Mishpacha CEO Avi Lazar welcomed the attendees and the Mishpacha leadership delegation from Israel, Rav Moshe Grylak, publisher Eli Paley and editors Mrs. Shana Friedman, Binyamin Rose and Mrs. Bassi Gruen. Along with vigorous give and take between Binyamin Rose and elected officials and political activists like David Greenfield, Phil Goldfeder, Chaim Deutsch, Aaron Weider, Rabbi Shmuel Lefkowitz, Simcha Felder, Jeff Ballabon and Phillip Rosen, there were two keynote addresses. Mr. Malcolm Hoenlein spoke with intensity and feeling about the need to work together, sharing lessons from his personal journey, and Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky offered a spirited challenge to a room full of ‘shluchim’, each in their own way, to commit themselves to each and every Jew. What made the event unique, reflected a veteran askan, wasn’t the food, venue or even topics discussed. “I don’t remember the last time I sat around tables with senior leadership of virtually every major frum organization, chassidus and yeshiva- Satmar, Chabad, Agudah, OU, NCYI, NSCY, Lakewood, plus a host of elected officials and public servants-and just engage in conversation without another purpose. These were people there that I normally don’t see in shul, at simchos – people I couldn’t reach through regular channels.” The Mishpacha Summit proved- like the magazine itself- that differences in attitude or approach are smaller than shared values, commitment and achrayus for Klal Yisroel. A massive show of force is expected at the Expo from a cross section of Jewish communities, maximizing the potential for each exhibitor and attendee. Reb Duvi Honig expresses particular thanks to Prime 95 proprietor Yudi Toporowitch, who has warmly opened the restaurant’s doors to Parnassah Network – OJC causes: “Yudi is great example of someone who runs a first-class venture and uses it to service other businesses, and the community at large, in a most upstanding way.”

Reb Leizer Geldzahler Lives Again in This Incredible New Book

[COMMUNICATED CONTENT] Every once in a while a new book appears on the scene that shakes people up and gets everyone talking. Several years ago Rabbi Yisroel Besser wrote a book called Reb Shlomo (published by Judaica Press) about the legendary Rabbi Shlomo Freifeld, Rosh Yeshivah of Sh’or Yoshuv in Far Rockaway, and it spread like wildfire. Speakers everywhere were retelling stories from it, and everyone was recommending it to their friends. Now it looks like Rabbi Besser has done it again with the publication of Reb Leizer — The life and legacy of Rabbi Eliezer Geldzahler (Judaica Press). There’s no question this book will change the way people think. Who was Rabbi Geldzahler? He was a truly innovative rosh yeshivah, a breath of fresh air in the chassidishe chinuch world. He lived in Lakewood, led a yeshivah of mostly Satmar talmidim, was himself close to Breslov, Stolin, Chabad, and Amshinov and was a grandson of Rav Dessler, heir to the path of Kelm. His wife was a granddaughter of the Bobover Rov. He fused all this and more in his yeshivah. His own personality was larger than life, his smile and warmth contagious, his enthusiasm electric, and his patience and respect for individuals legendary. But his great work was cut short. On a bus with talmidim on the way to Tzfas, the driver dozed off. Reb Leizer jumped from his seat to seize the steering wheel and keep the bus on course; an accident ensued. The talmidim were all spared; only the Rosh Yeshivah was taken. At the young age of 46, Reb Leizer left this world, leaving behind an almanah and thirteen children. This book was conceived by Rav Michel Twerski of Milwaukee, Reb Leizer’s father-in-law. Reb Leizer built a world-class yeshivah while still a young man, opening up a new world to chassidishe bachurim that offered them the penetrating lomdus of the yeshivah world while fiercely safeguarding their mesorah. He challenged them to grow and made their spirits soar, but, most important of all, he gave them dreams and aspirations. Reb Michel felt that the lessons of Reb Leizer’s methods in chinuch could inspire parents in a generation in which chinuch is such a challenge. Reb Leizer offers a unique chance to be inspired, enthused, motivated, and heartened. Reb Leizer didn’t have much time in this world, but he changed many lives nonetheless. Through this book, it’s certain that he will still change a few more …. The book is available now at judaicapress.com and your local Judaica store.

Pidyon Shvuyim: Gedolim Sign Kol Koreh On Behalf Of Rubashkin; Ask Community To Do Whatever Possible

In an unprecedented move, a Kol Koreh on behalf of Sholom Rubashkin was signed by Gedolim from all sects of Klal Yisroel, asking the Tzibur to act. Never before in recent history have so many Rabbonim and Rebbes from Satmar, Lakewood, Chabad, and Litvish Roshei Yeshiva come together on a signed Kol Koreh. TRANSLATION OF LETTER SIGNED BY RABBONIM SHLITA: To our Jewish Brethren Worldwide: Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin is due to be sentenced shortly, and as the situation now stands, is facing the possibility of a very lengthy jail sentence, G-d forbid. US Legal experts have informed community leaders involved in this case, that the recommended sentence (by the US attorney) is overzealous and excessively harsh, and is totally unparalleled to similar offenses by others. According to the experts involved in the case, phone calls and letters to department of justice (expressing concern) about this situation can be helpful. Therefore, there is a holy obligation  for every single individual to get involved in this matter of utmost Pidyon Shvuyim , and to do whatever they possibly can to assist in this matter. As well, anyone who has the ability to urge the department of justice or political officials to rectify the (undue) harshness (displayed by the DOJ) should get in touch with the committee as soon as possible, and do whatever they possibly can to help rectify the (undue) harshness, and hereby fulfill the mitzvah of ‘Lo Taamod’ – not standing by idly while a fellow’s blood is shed. As the Shulchan Aruch Yoreah Deah rules (252:3): Every moment that one delays the mitzvah of Pidyan Shvuyim, when there exists the possibility to assist sooner, is tantamount to committing bloodshed. As the Rambam’s states famously in the Laws of Matnas Aniyim (8:4): There exists no greater mitzvah than that of Pidyun Shvuyim ; One who looks away from assisting in helping to free the person, violates the injunctions of : Do Not Harden Your Heart, Do Not Be Tightfisted and Do Not Stand By While The Blood of Your Fellow is Being Shed. The Rambam then states an additional five mitzvahs involved in this. Our Sages have already stated (Shabbos 151b ): All Who Have Compassion on Living Beings, Heaven will have compassion on him. May Hashem positively change the hearts of the authorities to good; May the cries of the imprisoned come before Hashem, and speedily extract him from his imprisonment. Amen. Month of Iyor, 5770. SIGNED BY LEADING RABBIS IN AMERICA & CANADA: Rav Dovid Feinstein (Mesivta Tiferes Yerushalayim), Skulener Rebbe, Rav Mordechai Shmuel Ashkenazi (Rov, Kfar Chabad), Mattisdorfer Rov, Pupa Rebbe, Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky (Rosh yeshiva Philadelphia), Rav Malkiel Kotler (Rosh Yeshiva BMG, Lakewood), Rav Chaim Yehuda Krinsky (Merkos L’Inyonei Chinuch, Chabad-Lubavitch), Novaminsker Rebbe, Satmar Rebbe of Williamsburg, Rav Yonasan Bonyomin Weiss (Av Beis Din, Montreal), Rav Menachem Meir Weissmandel (Av Beis Din, Monsey), Rav Moshe Wolfson (Rosh Yeshiva Torah V’Daas) LINK TO HELP SAVE RUBASHKIN: Click HERE to see how you can help Rubashkin! Nochum Kurinsky: The Day I Watched a Man Die

Today I watched a man die. The call came in  at about 2:00 pm. “Can you be with Mr. Martin Grossman during his execution?” How can you say no? How can you say yes? What can you say? After speaking to my wife, I decided to go. I made a few phone calls and found a companion for the road and off we went. Along the way, another friend offered to join and the three of us departed down the I95 to the I10 to be with Mr. Grossman. A little background. A few months ago Rabbi Mendy Katz from Aleph sent out an email to the local Chabad. Rabbis.  In it was a very simple request. Due to the financial downturn Aleph could no longer afford to send Yeshiva students to all the prisons in Florida. Would any community be willing to go visit a few prisons in their area? We volunteered. Rather, I volunteered and subsequently invited members of our community to come along. On our first visit, during Chanukah, our group was divided into pairs of two for maximum efficiency. David Sall, a local psychiatrist and Rabbi Menachem Mendel Lieberman, my lifetime friend and a local law student teamed up and I partnered with Dovid Moyer, a local financial repair specialist and businessman. Our group went to a number of prisons that day including Union Correctional. Mendy and David went to death row. As you know by now, death row housed the now world famous Martin Grossman A”H. Several days after our visit to death row, the Governor signed Martin’s death warrant and set the date of execution for February 16th at 6:00 PM. Saddened by the news, but not really sure what to do, I kept about my daily business and even went back to visit the  prison one more time with a group. Sometime during January, Rabbi Katz called me, “Martin is going to die,” he said. “What we can do to help him?” At first, I have to admit, I was hesitant. What could I do? I’m a local Chabad Rabbi.  This is for the national organizations.  After reading the proclamation by Rabbi Shochat of Los Angeles that one could even violate Shabbos to save Mr. Grossman, I was convinced. First, I called Rabbi Mendy Katz back and told him I was on board but only to assist him, not to take charge of this. Then, I called Rabbi Oirechman the Chabad Rabbi in Tallahassee and asked if he was on board. After giving it some thought, he said that he was fully on board. Now was time to get the plan in motion.( Let also add that tremendous work was being done by many organizations at the time. This is just my account and the events that led me to watch Martin Die.) Rabbi Katz put together a letter that most of the 150 Chabad Rabbis in Florida signed. Another letter was written by Rabbi Zvi Biarsky which many Rabbis from every Jewish group signed as well, and they were both later hand delivered to the Governor by Rabbi Oirechman. In addition, I started an online petition. On the first day we had 23 signatures, day two we had 200 on day three 1,000. At about that time, many in the broader Jewish community

JUST IN: Martin Grossman Executed Moments Ago

YWN regrets to inform our readership that Michoel Yechiel ben Miriam Sorah, Martin Grossman (a bal Teshuva who put on tefillin and davened 3 times a day), was R”L executed by lethal injection just moments ago by at Florida State Prison. A source at the Florida State Prison tells YWN that a Chabad Shliach was with Martin Grossman just prior to his execution, and recited Viduy and other Tefillos with him. He was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of 26-year-old Margaret “Peggy” Park, who was killed on Dec. 13, 1984. Tens of thousand of Religious Jews had signed petitions, close to 10,000 phone calls were recorded at the Governors Office, thousands of emails were sent, and Tehiilim gatherings were held, all begging Florida Governor Charlie Crist for a 60 day stay of execution for Martin Grossman. Sadly, the Governor refused to grant even a short meeting to the leaders of major Jewish organizations who were heavily involved in the issue (to hear their plea): Rabbi Pesach Lerner- Young Israel Rabbi David Zwiebel- Agudath Israel Rabbi Steven Weil- OU Rabbi Dovid Niederman- UJO (Satmar) Rabbi Moshe Visel- UJCare (Satmar) Rabbi Basil Herring- RCA Rabbi Aaron Lipskar- Aleph Institute Governor Crist even ignored a call for mercy by the Pope…… Arrangements are currently underway to have the body released so a proper Jewish burial can be given to him. FURTHER DETAILS TO FOLLOW. (Dov Gordon – YWN)

Chief Rabbi of Israel Metzger To FL Gov: Don’t Rush To Execute Grossman!

Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi Yonah Metzger has written a letter to Florida Governor Charlie Crist asking him for a 60 day stay of execution for Martin Grossman. (FULL TEXT FOLLOWS ARTICLE) Rav Metzger writes, “It has come to my attention that new evidence has surfaced in this case and changes in the law have taken place that merit consideration of clemency. I am convinced that there is sufficient cause to at least delay this execution until all evidence and legal arguments are presented.” Grossman on death row for over 25 years is scheduled to be executed this Tuesday night 6:00PM EST. This letter comes on the heels of a historic letter to the Florida Governor written and signed by the leaders of seven major American orthodox organizations representing hundreds of thousands of Jews, including: Agudath Israel of America, National Council of Young Israel, Orthodox Union,, Satmar (UJO- UJC) RCA and Chabad urging the Governor to grant clemency to Mr. Grossman. A personal request by Rabbinical leaders to meet has so far been ignored by the Governor. Leading Askonim feel that all possible efforts, both political and financial, must be brought to bear on Governor Crist. But they acknowledge that the greatest chance for success in saving Grossman’s life lies with the grass roots. “Every call, email and fax to the Governor can make the difference. Don’t wait until its too late, contact the Governor now” said a leader of the campaign to save Grossman. The following update and message from the committee to save Martin Grossman was sent to YWN: Less than 30 hours are all we have left to reverse this bitter decree. Yes, it is a fact that the Governor has been overwhelmed with pressure but it has not been nearly enough. Every possible avenue is being exhausted. Political and financial pressure from the top down and the bottom up is being exerted but- WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME!!! CONTACT THE GOVERNOR – NOW! Contact Gov. Dear Governor Crist: Thank you for your steadfast support of the State of Israel and of the Jewish people! I am respectfully writing to you in the name of the Jewish people here in Israel and around the world concerning the case of Martin Grossman. As you no doubt are aware, the American system of jurisprudence is rooted in the Biblical and Talmudic code of law. The Biblical tradition teaches that although capital punishment is permissible; it is only permissible under very circumscribed circumstances, and only when every reasonable opportunity has been given to review new evidence and testimony. It has come to my attention that new evidence has surfaced in this case and changes in the law have taken place that merit consideration of clemency. I am convinced that there is sufficient cause to at least

An Open Plea To The Jewish Nation: A National Call To Action

As you may know, a Jewish man is slated for execution – in Florida this coming Tuesday. Martin Grossman was convicted of killing Margaret Parks, a Florida Wildlife Officer, in 1984, when he was 19 years old. He did so while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, and in an act of panic, not premeditation.  He has conducted himself as a model prisoner since his incarceration some 25 years ago and has shown profound remorse and regret for his actions. A united coalition of Jewish groups and non- Jewish groups including: Agudath Israel, Young Israel, Orthodox Union, Chabad/Lubavitch, Satmar, RCA, Aleph Institute, and many others are asking Florida Governor Charlie Crist to grant clemency to Mr. Grossman, and have also requested a meeting in person with Governor Crist to discuss the matter. It is urgently important that the Governor hear from the grassroots as well – certainly from people who live or spend significant time in Florida, but even from non-Floridians. His e-mail address is [email protected] , Or [email protected] Phone- (850) 488-7146 Fax -850-487-0801. Letters and calls should be polite pleas to the Governor to take into account Mr. Grossman’s youth and impairment at the time of the crime and his good behavior and remorse in the years since. And the request should be that Mr. Grossman be permitted to serve his debt to society by serving the rest of his life in prison. May we have happier occasions to demonstrate our achdus and ahavas Yisroel. And may our action here merit us such times. Please pray for Martin Grossman, Michoel Yechiel ben Miriam Sorah. Dershowitz: “Even those who strongly support capital punishment would limit it to recidivists or people who ‎commit the most heinous of crimes.  Martin Grossman fits neither of those categories.  He does ‎not belong on death row.  His crime, committed when he was a teenager, was unplanned, ‎unpremeditated and impulsive—the product of a serious mental illness, that can now be proved ‎by medical technology that was unavailable at the time of his sentencing.  He has been in prison ‎for more than a quarter of a century, during which time he has been a model prisoner who has ‎shown great remorse for what he did.  All that he is seeking now is a 60 day postponement of his ‎execution, so that his supporters can martial the evidence and present his case for clemency.  No ‎one should be rushed to execution while doubts remain unresolved.  Justice demands that he be ‎given the 60 days to prove that he does not deserve to die at the hands of the state.”  ‎ Alan M. Dershowitz NOTE: YWN has learned from sources inside the Gov. Office that the Governor is “feeling the heat”. We have also learned that it will take an overwhelming about of pressure from constituents to get the 60 day stay. (YWN Desk – NYC)

Community Leaders Seek to Prevent Execution

Both Jewish and non-Jewish community leaders are petitioning Florida Governor Charlie Crist for an emergency stay of execution for death-row prisoner Martin Grossman, scheduled to be executed on Feb. 16th. National Council of Young Israel, Agudath Israel of America,Orthodox Union, Chabad, Satmar, Rabbinical Alliance of America, are amongst a list of 200 organizations pleading with the Florida  Governor to grant a 60 day stay which would enable for a comprehensive clemency application to be presented and considered. The case of Martin Grossman is  gaining national attention. Grossman, in 1984  was a  19-year-old drug-addicted high-school drop-out with a juvenile record for trespassing. He and a friend, Thanye Taylor, drove to an isolated nature reserve to fire a found handgun. A wildlife officer stopped them, searched their car and confiscated the gun. Martin, who is reported to have an IQ of 77, panicked and began pleading with the officer not to report him as he would be in violation of his probation. When she reached  for her radio  a  struggle ensued, which resulted in the officer reaching for her own gun, whereupon Martin panicked, snatched her gun and shot her. A psychiatrist who evaluated him concluded, from his psychological and medical condition, that he could not have formed the intent to kill. Taylor served less than three years in prison while Martin was sentenced to death. Mr. Grossman has been on death row for over 25 years. The petition argues that the death sentence meted out to him is disproportionate in the extreme and that his defense was inadequate. Only one percent of murder sentences end in capital punishment, crimes commonly referred to as “the worst of the worst.” The  petition further argues that Martin’s crime, considering the lack of premeditation, his drug addiction, his IQ level, and several other compelling factors does not qualify for the death penalty, and that the court ignored mitigating circumstances. Only four of thirty-three available defense witnesses were used in the sentencing phase. Additionally, there are allegations of prosecutorial misconduct as well. A fellow prisoner and key witness for the government swears that he lied at trial, and that he was rewarded by having his own charges dropped. Martin Grossman’s appeals regarding these issues have been rejected without hearings, but they could be considered in a clemency petition. “Martin has shown deep  and profound remorse over the years, and is no longer the same wild reckless person he was 26 years ago” argues Rabbi menachem Katz from the Aleph Institute, who has visited Martin regularly over the past 15 years. As of this release, Governor Crist has not agreed to grant a stay. Execution is set for February 16 at 6:00 PM. Concerned citizens are encouraged to call or email the Governor and ask for clemency and mercy for Martin Grossman: 1-850-488-7146 / [email protected] and sign the online petition http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/save-martin-grossman (YWN Desk – NYC)
