Israel’s Radio Kol Chai reported today, that in response to a request by France’s Chief Rabbi Yosef Sitruk, Shimon Peres has agreed to keep Shabbos this week (for the first time in his life) as part of an outreach campaign by European rabbis.
The initiative was started by Rabbi Yosef Sitruk to try and unite Jews all over the world to preserve that sabbath day
Even more incredibly, Peres announced he will officially call upon all Jews worldwide to observe Shabbos preceding Israel’s Independence Day, and to pray for peace.
The Kol Chai reporter stated that such a declaration would qualify as a precursor to the immediate coming of Moshiach – as some hold that if all Jews were to keep Shabbos, Moshiach would come.
Interestingly, Haaretz reported this story – but added the following after their report:
Former Meretz chairman Yossi Sarid was quoted on Maariv’s online news site, saying that “I don’t undertake to preserve the same Sabbath. It depends on my plans. In my opinion this whole initiative is a pretentious display. Besides, my sources give me different information about the messiah.”

His first shabbos? Wasn’t he frum in der alter heim?
Wow this is really something…almost unbelievable…May הקב”ה open his eyes and his heart to the emes of the תורה הקדושה and may Mr. Peres make תשובה שלימה אי”ה!
I guess Sarid ruins it for everyone. What else is new?!!
and the bad malach will have to say Amen!!
Whatever you want to (even if justified) i envy this particular Kiddush hashem.
According to wikipedia, his parents were not from but his grandparents were:
“In his memoirs, Peres writes that his grandfather, Rabbi Zvi Meltzer, studied at the Volozhin Yeshiva and was a grandson of Rabbi Chaim Volozhin. This grandfather had a great impact on his life. “I grew up in my grandfather’s home,” Peres said. “He looked after my education. He taught me Talmud. It wasn’t as easy as it sounds. I didn’t come from an observant home. My parents were not Orthodox. But I was very religious. Once I found my parents listening to the radio on the Sabbath so I smashed it. But to my father’s credit, let it be said, I received a blessing from the Chofetz Chaim in Raduń when I was a child. My father took me to see him.”
Maybe he is Mashiach
There have been persistent and believable rumors for years that he is a Goy. His Frum wife threw him out of the house thirty years or so ago when she discovered his true identity. No one has ever been able to find any evidence that he came from Poland as he claims and he does not speak Yiddish. So why is he going to keep Shabbos?
Just one shabbos and we’ll all be free…..
Yossi Sarid is so ‘aver ubatel’ why is his opinion still being sought by anyone anymore?
Mazel Tov! It is about time!
Will he have Chulent ?
he had a small amount of cholent thursday night after night seder
This not the first time, his wife is shomer shabbos and they have done shabbos before. The question is, does Peres acknowledge the Brisk kinship? Now this is important info.,
the only source for the bracha from the chofetz chaim is peres himself.
the bracha was that he should be saved from death. no one understood what the bracha meant, since he never served in zahal, never was in a particularly life threatening situation.
till the rabin assasination, where he was intimately involved in the case.
now EVERYONE knows, though NO ONE wants to really investigate what happened.
by the way, though his father was not religious, he wasnt stupid. this happened on a train trip in poland, they passed through radin. the father said, lets stop off here, and see the chofetz chaim. peres was five years old at the tims.
the story is mishpacha is available online if you google peres and chofetz chaim.
as for yossi sarid, though he is traditional, he does respect religion, just not in public lifre, not in politics. he goes to shul often (probably drives there, but …)
As a descendant of the same yichus myself, I can attest to the fact that shimon peres (who I have despised prior to reading this article) is in fact a ben achar ben of rav chiam voloshin (as am I) This can be confirmed by the vaad hayichus in EY which has our family tree.
May this great kiddush hashem of the president of Medinas Yisroel keeping shabbos bifarhesya and publicly encouraging others to do so be a zechus for him and the mishpacha and be a tikkun for his past.
As to yossie sarid harasha the name says it all and unlike Shimon Peres who has zechus avos he probably is descended from the airev rav and may he too see the light of teshuva
As to the Brisker family they are no relatives of ours, they are not BEN ACHER BEN, study history before you comment. No true valoshin einekel would ever come out with such outragous chumros.
next step will be going to sloatsburg rest area for cholent 🙂
aryeh_z what are you talking about that is loshon hora and totally not true. he is a yid ben achar ben from rav chain mivaloshin and in the vilna cemetery is his mishpocha – the name is persky though not peres.
aryehz
must be the kindled jewish neshama.
neve aliza loshon hara dosn’t apply to mechalleliy shabbos b’farhesya!
19, Feif Un,
Did you ever hear of ‘Zechus Avos’?
To observe Shabbos & Pray for Peace? Why can’t he just be proud to proclaim that he’s keeping Shabbos without having to add anything else to that.
shaalu shalom yerushalayim its part of our tanach just as keeping shabbos is.
