Backed by 82 of the 120 members of Knesset in his decision, President Shimon Peres on motzei Shabbos bestowed the presidential mandate to attempt to form the next coalition government on Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his Likud/Beitenu list. This marks the beginning of the official talks towards putting together a new coalition and cabinet.
Shas, Yahadut Hatorah, Yesh Atid, Kadima, and Bayit HaYehudi recommended Mr. Netanyahu. The others opted not to recommend anyone for the mandate.
Beginning with motzei Shabbos, Mr. Netanyahu has 28 days to present his new coalition to the president. Should he require additional time, the president may if he wishes grant an additional 14 day extension.
